Delicious food - HOWEVER can’t stress this enough:
PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION
Long story short - they twice served me a rainbow roll with gluten ingredients - first with wheat containing crabstick, and next with fish roe soaked in that wheaty soy sauce solution roe sometimes has. Third time was the charm and the roll I eventually got was the bees knees.
Full disclosure version:
Ordered a Rainbow Roll off the exclusively gluten free menu, mentioned I have celiac and how even cross contamination is scary. Phoebe was reassuring; told me her bestie has gut issues so she knows how important that stuff is.
Roll came out with black and red fish roe on it - I hadn’t expected that so I asked to doublecheck the roe wasn’t the kind prepackaged in wheaty soy sauce solution- she graciously goes and gets me both the black and red roe packages so I can read the ingredients lists - no wheat listed - yay!
I go to take my first bite - I see crab stick. Shoot. Okay, let’s doublecheck this too (did I mention I got badly glutened about 4 weeks ago, am now hyper vigilant). She brings that package out and ….oh damn. There is wheat in this crab stick. That’s…not good.
They offer to make me a second roll, cool.
Second one comes out, it has a third kind of fish egg on it, now the colors are red/black/yellow. Dammit, better check the yellow roe (but surely it’s fine) ….nope, yellow roe has the soy sauce gluteny coating.
They take that roll back and make me a third roll - this one delicious, this one with yellowtail instead of crab, no yellow roe and no gluten, just totally delicious.
But if I hadn’t been THAT level of *extra* about it, I would have gotten crazy sick. I hope they go back to the drawing board and become better informed as a result of this experience. 💕 y’all be safe and doublecheck stuff in the mean time
