Amazing and knowledgeable staff! Danielle went above and beyond to confirm the blackened seasoning was gluten free - and it is. They have a separate gluten free menu. Grill blackened chicken was amazing!

I wasn't impressed unfortunately. There is a gf menu, but very few items. (At least there is one.) My salmon was overcooked. The grits were good (if you can have dairy) and so was the cabbage. There is a bottomless huge cup of tea.

We went here because of the outdoor seating. We travelled with our dog. The service ended up being outstanding. Our waiter went above and beyond to be helpful and answer questions. The she crab soup was amazing! The menu was a little limited but the waiter was very willing to help.

The GF menu has been reduced quite a bit, the fryers are shared with flour products, so you have to skip anything fried. The spinach was very watery, like frozen, spinach, and the blackened cod was a little over cooked. The cheese grits were great.

Great food, terrible service. Pretty sure it was a one-off experience. Our waiter quit during the meal. Got the She Crab Soup and Grilled Catfish with a loaded baked potato. Fish was awesome.

We ate at Barbara Jean’s twice during our visit to the island. The food not only tasted wonderful, I had no gluten issues at all.

Laid back environment. Several options for GF including sides. We had the salmon, catfish, and shrimp all grilled. The rice, and ambrosia sides were fantastic. The grits and carrots were ok.

I ordered the special shrimp scampi served over rice in a special sauce. I begged for the recipe because it was so delicious! Was served with 2 other vegetables and I had the she crap soup as an appetizer. Delicious!!! Very comfortable mom and pop look to the restaurant and prices were reasonable compared to others in the area. Highly recommend ❤

Barbara Jean’s squarely hits the 3 key elements of good food, comfort food, fast and friendly service, and prime location at the historic hub of St. Simon’s Island — The Pier. The specials change daily, but Barbara Jean’s keeps gluten-free menus at the hostess stand and a supervising manager is quick to pop over and advise of any new items or possibilities that can be arranged. Barbara Jean’s is a MUST STOP for anyone who loves she crab soup, particularly those of us Celiacs who’d grudgingly resigned ourselves to giving up the comfort and savory flavors of seafood soups. The gluten free she crab soup is a staple on the menu, and this year I’ll be ordering 2 bowls full! Barbara Jean’s casual, crowded, vibrant restaurant is fully in keeping with the casual and welcoming attitude that has pervaded this once “strictly coat-and-tie for dining Island.” The restaurant decor is in keeping with a bustling family-friendly beach restaurant, with easy wipe off plastic tablecloths and laminated menus. Barbara Jean’s is exactly what it purports and needs to be and my 4 star rating is meant as top marks for delicious food in a casual, easily cleaned setting.

Excellent dinner! My daughter has Celiac and they were fantastic. They have a separate gluten free menu noting things that you can order. My daughter is 11 so we ordered grilled chicken fingers, and she carb loaded with mashed potatoes and a loaded baked potato- all incredibly delicious.

The staff was very friendly! We are wheat/rye/barley allergic and had success with the buttered corn, mashed potatoes and grilled chicken!
My celiac mom said that she had their crab cakes more than once. They have no fillers. She was thrilled.

We were skeptical at first because our experience with small local places hasn't been good. I called at first to ensure they could accommodate, without hesitation they said yes. When we arrived and asked for the gluten free menu the hostess said Barabara was a dietician and would come talk to us. She came to the table and answered our questions and said that cross contamination would not be a problem. During our meal I noticed that same woman cleaning tables and doing other small jobs, come to find out she is Barbara Jean the owner. My wife got shrimp and a potato with no problems.

The crab cakes were very good. The green beans were fresh and surprisingly good too. The spinach was boiled and peppery, not my favorite. They had a separate menu for GF foods.
