My husband and I dined at Birch’s on the Lake tonight. I informed my server that I have Celiac Disease and would need a gluten free meal. He pointed out the GF symbol on the menu and said all menu items with the GF symbol are gluten free. (He also said the brewmaster has Celiac Disease and has developed gluten free beer.) We ordered a starter - 1 LB. Old Bay Peel and Eat Shrimp (which had the GF symbol). The shrimp came and were piled high in a dish. We were enjoying it - until it became apparent there was something in the dish beneath the shrimp - a piece of BREAD! The shrimp were laid on top of a piece of bread. I was mildly shocked and very disappointed. The server was apologetic and did not charge us for the shrimp dish. The manager stopped by and I explained to him that I don’t consider a shrimp dish to be gluten free if the shrimp are laying on top of a hidden piece of BREAD. He again said he would not charge me. I would have gladly paid for gluten free shrimp. I probably will not go back there as I don’t trust their knowledge or handling of Gluten Free meals.

Head brewer/owner was diagnosed with Celiac. Enzymes are now added in the brewing process to bring gluten down to less than 20 parts per million, he tests the beer to ensure safety (and quality, of course)!
