My two sons and I came for lunch on Tuesday (April 5) around 1:30 and ordered a regular slice of pepperoni for one child. For the other child & myself, we ordered a Gluten free pizza with pepperoni. We explained that my son has celiac disease and cannot have gluten of any kind even in the form of cross-contamination. The waiter said he understood and also documented a food allergy on the receipt. When my son was diagnosed last year, we were recommended to Blue Moon pizza as a safe place for celiacs to eat. Before our first visit, we called to check to see if the cheese, pepperoni, and sauce were also gluten free and were assured that they are.

We have had such great experiences that we never checked his pizza with our Nima sensor that can detect gluten from a sample of food. On Tuesday night, I decided I should go ahead and just verify that our good feelings about Blue Moon were accurate especially since I had just made the recommendation to another celiac family to visit your restaurant. I took a sample from an edge (where a knife would have cut the slice) containing crust, sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. It came back positive. I was in disbelief so checked the following to try to eliminate the point of contamination: pepperoni that had curled up away from the other toppings during baking and was not cut, cheese from the center of the pizza, crust only from the center of the pizza. All test points came back positive including the gluten free crust. The cheese had the strongest positive reading according to the control strips on the back. I even ran a control test on a blueberry to verify that the testing capsules were accurate. I threw the leftovers out and contacted the manager. He said all the right things and was truly sorry. He gave us a gluten free pizza to take home and bake ourselves. Unfortunately, it also tested positive for gluten. Fortunately, I had not yet given it to my son and he doesn’t experience immediate symptoms that would have made other celiacs severely ill.
