Health inspection issues, high risk dining - Indus has been my go-to place for Indian buffet as I loved the choices available, but lately I have been having mild diarrhea each time I ate the food at Indus. Out of curiosity I decided to check their health inspection reports at state report site.
This restaurant has repeated violations and warnings on sanitation and how the food is handled. Inspections held in last three years had warnings issued as the restaurant did not comply to guidelines. They remediate the findings during the inspection and the same shows up again in next inspection which highlights the fix are temporary and food served in between inspection dates does not meet standards.
The repeated violations to list a few
- Stop sale issued at every inspection on time/temperature control for safety food due to temperature abuse.
- Cooked meal not held at right temperature or cooled at right temperature or kept overnight. This is serious as it can lead to bacterial growth which results in diarrhea.
- Establishment has no procedures for employees to follow in response to a vomiting or diarrheal event where the vomit or diarrhea is discharged onto surfaces in the establishment.
- Toxic substance/chemical improperly stored. Observed chlorine sanitizer bucket stored directly on the floor.
- Accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine located in the kitchen area.
- Live, small flying insects in kitchen, food preparation area, or food storage area.

First time here... was excited over the bread like crisps brought out instead of bread...Made of lentil flour! Food was amazing and so many gluten-free options to choose from! Definitely warrants a return!!!

Most of the staff was knowledgeable about those of us who need to be totally gluten-free. However, not all the staff. The menu was marked well with LOTS of GF options. However, when my meal came out...they said it is normally served with the rice. They advised I not eat it. Later we got to talk with the main person, who did indeed say it was GF
Yes
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area for gluten-free vegan options. I've eaten at Indus dozens of times since May 2012 and never had a problem. The entire vegetarian menu is gluten-free so even the lunch buffet is accessible. My favorites are the okra (I haven't had a problem like previous reviewer, perhaps it was the meat dish), Chana masala (chickpeas), Baingan Bharta (eggplant) and spinach dosas. I have Celiac and have always left with a happy belly after eating from the many vegan options.
Yes
Not reliably celiac safe. I'm giving Indus 2 stars rather than 1 because the first time I ate here in July 2013 I both enjoyed my meal and didn't get sick. This time, however, after trying again and again to confirm gluten free, I got really sick from eating Bhindi (okra) and lamb vindaloo with plain basmati rice. Both dishes are listed as GF on their menu. They are NOT. Our server appeared to have no idea what gluten was, the first sign I shouldn't have relied on prior experience.
No
What a find. I love this place. The food is delicious. The GF menu is extensive. For the non-GF diners in your party, the weekend buffet is excellent and affordable. Classy staff and atmosphere too.
