Not knowledgeable. None of their topping sauces are safe - caramel, hot fudge, chocolate... They'll say "tap" is safe but jarred is not because the jars have a preservative in them. This is not true. None of the sauces are safe. They fill up the jars from the "tap". None of it's safe. They will tell you it is, and then you'll spend days being sick. Cross-contamination is HIGH. These are kids who are super busy. They don't understand or care if they touch someone's chicken fingers, then your ice cream spoon. This is not a safe place to eat.

I’d give maybe 3.5. Loved Leatherby’s growing up and we even had their ice cream at my wedding reception before I had celiac, but I was really scared to try it based on other reviews and the fact that Leatherby’s is basically run by teenagers. I contacted the company to ask if they had a gf menu or at least to know if the Black and Tan ice cream is gf because it’s my favorite. This was their reply: “There is no gluten in a Black and Tan. The caramel served in store and the chocolate sauce are gluten free. The caramel in jars to go is the only caramel that contains gluten(it’s a preservative). When you order, let your server know you’re allergic to gluten, and they will wash/sanitize everything in the process so there’s no cross contamination. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!” At the restaurant, our server said they had a chart that said which items were gluten free. Wish I could’ve seen it. Although they have a few salads that look gluten free, I wouldn’t trust the savory food at all with cross contamination. I ended up getting the Black and Tan ice cream, even though I was still pretty terrified (I’ll include photos). I’m not sure if they took any special precautions even though I requested it. The ice cream was very good although it could’ve used sauce on top like they used to do many years ago. Overall, it was delicious and I don’t think I had any symptoms. I don’t think I’d come here often, though. When the place is basically run by teenagers and there’s no gluten free menu, it makes me nervous.

If I could give zero stars I would. At least they did get me sick because they were out of everything gluten free then she offered me breaded chicken strips. They also waited until my family had ordered to tell me.

Shane was GREAT. He was knowledge and willing to help me ensure my order avoided as much CC as possible. Their fries are a no-go if you're super sensitive because they're cooked in the same fryer as the chicken strips, but they had a paper with information on allergens for the ice cream, and they toast the buns on a separate griddle from everything else. Their BBQ sauce is gluten free, as well, so I was able to get their BBQ bacon cheeseburger wrapped in lettuce. So yummy!

Sad that the hot fudge is not safe, but at least their caramel that they serve in the restaurant IS. NOTE: the stuff they sell in the jars IS NOT. Had an amazing Sunday with vanilla and toasted almond ice creams, and their amazing caramel sauce!! Their website lists all of their allergens. Just google “Leatherby’s allergens”.

Staff were knowledgeable and very careful to avoid cross-contamination. The allergen list was immediately available and helpful. My son (celiac) didn't get sick.

They definitely don’t have a gluten free menu and eating any meal item is a no-go but they can provide an allergen list for the ice creams and sauces and if you ask them to put your order in on an allergen ticket they should use clean utensils and pull from new containers; !now I don’t know if that is standard protocol or not though! I order a vanilla caramel sundae and did not get sick. I know the hot fudge is not GF according to their allergen list. It could potential be a risky place to eat depending on your level of sensitivity, but I wanted to review it as it was a childhood fav of my mine I was missing for years and I did not get sick eating here when I asked them to put my order on a allergen ticket. So enjoy, hopefully.
