The staff at Pappasito's Willowbrook was careless and made my son and I sick yesterday. We were part of a 16 person group for a family birthday party. At the Pappasito's on 290 in Houston, we have been able to safely eat out. At that location, the waitress brought the kitchen manager to speak with us as soon as we mentioned gluten free. At the Willowbrook Mall location, we were given gluten free menus by the hostess when asked. The waiter seemed dismissive. When we asked for baked chips and a separate bowl of salsa, he had a staff member bring it to us. Many of the staff members who serve chips and salsa speak little English. When the chip basket that my son and I were sharing was dwindling, we asked for more baked chips and salsa. The staff member assigned to bring the second basket brought us the wrong chips. They weren't the regular chips and they looked like baked chips. My son, who is 14 and devours food, stopped eating the chips right away because his stomach hurt. When the waiter came back around, he noticed that they had brought us cerveza chips instead of baked chips. Cerveza is Spanish for beer. I don't know if the chips actually had beer in them. The may have just been the chips served at the bar. They told my husband, while I was sick in the bathroom, that those chips shared a fryer with gluten. The manager was appalled and very apologetic. If you need to eat at this location, I would recommend asking for a manager from the beginning. If you are choosing a Pappasito's location in Houston at which to dine, I would recommend the 290 location. I will never trust this location for a safe meal.
