WORST experience at a restaurant since celiac diagnosis (5 years ago). First, I asked for the gluten free menu, and the waitress thought there was only one gluten free menu available (bad start). Then, she brings out my side salad -that I specified gluten free - with croutons. I let her know that I ordered the gluten free salad, to which she replied, “It is.” I let her know that croutons are not gluten free. Then, she comes back with a “new” salad. I asked if this was a new salad or if the croutons were just picked off. After stuttering on her words she said it was a newly prepared salad. She set it down the salad, and I immediately saw crumbs. So, I explained even the smallest of crumbs makes me sick. Then, the third salad came out with cheese, and I am lactose intolerant.. and the salad did not have cheese in the description. At this point, though, I decided I wouldn’t be eating salad. Then, my meal came out. Pulled Pork with cheese on it (ordered no cheese) on a gluten free bun (got something right) but with onion rings right next to and touching the sandwich. Again, I let my waitress know that this order was incorrect and why I would be unable to eat it. At this point, she pulled out her electronic ordering device to show me that she had put the order in correctly without cheese. I’m assuming she was trying to shift the blame off of her, though I had a sandwich with cheese rubbing up on gluten in front of me, so I really wasn’t interested in whose fault it was. I sent the food back and let her know I didn’t need a new order. It was clear that this was not a safe restaurant for me to eat in. Once I realized I wouldn’t be eating, I ordered a root beer. The bill came and the waitress let me know her manager was able to cancel the cost of my meal... which I thought was a no brained since I ate no food? I was given no apologies or concern, and I thought the least they could do would be comp the root beer, though that did not happen either. Needless to say, this restaurant and staff does NOT understand the meaning or importance or gluten free in general and especially for celiacs.
