I was dying to have tacos or nachos while we were in Austin, and was having a hard time finding a place that was celiac safe and served less-healthy comfort food (there are tons of clean-eating, safe places in town!). Torchy's was highly recommended by everyone, so we tried it. I didn't feel confident enough to order a taco, but the server said they use a separate fryer for their chips, and that their guac and queso were both gf. How can you go wrong?? I should have ordered my own queso, because it was all I could do not to eat almost all of my husband's! It was delicious.

Cashier was very knowledgeable about gluten and said technically nothing is gluten free because of a shared kitchen. This includes corn tortillas, warmed on the same surface as the flour tortillas. He handed their “gluten friendly” menu to me and I ordered my tacos in a bowl. Delicious and actually very filling. I got the grilled baja shrimp and crossroads. We also love the chips and queso! I had no reaction.

Have a gluten free menu and really good about knowing what ingredients need to be changed for safety. Have an allergy key when ordering to alert the kitchen.
Yes
Due to the hand crafted nature of our food, variations in our supplier ingredients, and our use of shared cooking and preparation areas, we cannot ensure that our food is free from any allergens. We prepare our foods following procedures to prevent allergen cross-contact, but products containing wheat are made in our kitchens.
Democrat tacos are delicious. I’ve never had an issue here or at any Torchy’s. Chips are safe and addictive.
Their gluten free menu is not consistent with allergen information provided. I got tacos that were allegedly GF and got extremely sick. Will not be returning.
No
Summary -
Yummy but had issues ordering from the gluten conscious menu and chips are in shared fryer.
Story -
When I asked the server about gluten they immediately brought over the manager. Manager was great! They brought me the “gluten conscious” menu, explained that the chips are fried separately but the oil from both fryers are combined (so not GF but listed on the menu). I ordered the baja shrimp taco and the brisket taco on corn tortillas, mentioning the gluten allergy/menu to the server.
When the food came out, the shrimp was breaded and fried (so not GF), so we sent back with the server to redo. Then we realized that my partner’s burrito had vegan meat instead of the beef he ordered (burritos are not GF). He mentioned to manager who happened to walk by. Manager went back to kitchen and didn’t come back out until our food was out and correct. Everything was really good, including the mexican rice and street corn sides.
We tried to pay but the manager comped our meal. Very nice!
There is a bar and specialty cocktails but we didn’t try any.

I told the server I had celiac disease, explicitly asked her to indicate that I was GF on my ticket, and she did not. She also told me the chips are cooked in the same fryer as everything else, so I did not have any. Anyway, I ordered the airstream salad with the grilled chicken and have been sick all day :(

The person behind the counter seemed a bit unsure in dealing with gluten free requests, but then she also couldn't tell me what white wine they had, so she must have been new. Be sure to look at the "gluten conscious" menu to know your options before you order. That said, the chips are made in a dedicated fryer, and the queso and GF tacos we picked were great.
