They had a dedicated fryer for chips. Waitress wasn’t sure but then went back and confirmed from the kitchen that did. Food was good. Didn’t get sick.

Felt bad after eating the chicken fajitas. Tested my leftovers with Nima and gluten found. I didn’t test beforehand because I’ve eaten here without issues many times. Something has definitely changed.

We went here because the menu specified that all items can be made gluten-free unless otherwise marked. However, the restaurant fries everything in the same oil, which I was not made aware of until after I ordered. I changed my order and just got a salad, but I ended up terribly sick. My guess is that it was the chips, but I don’t know for sure.

I was excited reading another review that said Lupe's chips were cooked in a dedicated fryer and almost dove into the basket on our table. Thankfully I waited and the waitress confirmed NOT a dedicated fryer at this location. She did offer baked tortillas that would take 15-20 minutes.

I spoke with the manager before we were seated. The manager confirmed that most menu items don't contain any gluten ingredients. The wheat symbol notates the few menu items with gluten containing ingredients. HOWEVER, (a) their friers are shared, so all fried menu items, including the chips, are cross contaminated and therefore not safe for those with Celiac Disease, and (b) the corn tortillas are made in the same pans as the flour tortillas, so all menu items that include tortillas, e.g. fajitas, tacos, etc., are cross contaminated and therefore not safe for those with Celiac Disease. There is one exception for the tortilla rule the manager mentioned: the tortillas used for the enchiladas are premade corn tortillas from a bag, so the corn tortillas in the enchiladas should not be cross contaminated. The manager continued to advocate for me in the back of the house when they were prepping my food to avoid cross contamination.

Also, I just wasn't impressed with the taste of their food.

I am writing in the restaurant because I’m so frustrated. I have eaten here MANY times and been reassured by many employees that it was safe to eat fried foods. These include the ones marked on the menu as gluten free. There is no guarantee that these items are safe. The frier is “usually” chips but also could include an occasional item with gluten. I’ve not gotten sick before but as we know with celiac the reaction isn’t always immediate. Downright dangerous.

This is the original Lupe’s! It’s my family’s and my fav tex-mex since I was born basically. When diagnosed I felt so discouraged I wouldn’t be able to eat here, and the level of safety but I’ve made alternative options to be able to eat here safely and have the amazing margs! 1. I bring my own chips in my purse (I get an extra salsa to dip or a spoon for queso/gauc and my family is great about putting it on their plate so no CC) 2. I heat and bring my own corn tortillas in foil in my purse. (Note: they have lettuce cups and corn tortillas but they aren’t the safest - they try their best to clean the grill but I am extremely sensitive). 3. I get the mixed fajitas and they are safe! I make my tacos first before the rest of my family and all is well!

I know this is extra and sometimes not the most convenient but as my family’s local amazing mexican restaurant I make the time to feel safe. Celiac is not easy but never feel discouraged!
