I was excited reading another review that said Lupe's chips were cooked in a dedicated fryer and almost dove into the basket on our table. Thankfully I waited and the waitress confirmed NOT a dedicated fryer at this location. She did offer baked tortillas that would take 15-20 minutes.
I told my server I had a gluten sensitivity when my fiance and I sat down. He said the chips shared a fryer with other items, and that's personally not something I've ever had issues with before. I appreciated the warning. The menu does a good job explaining what is/isn't gluten, and my server was great about communicating with the kitchen. Tasted great and had no issues the next day.

GF items are listed on the menu. Whenever the server couldn’t answer a question, he brought over someone who could. The food was delicious and the vibe was really nice.

My favorite Mexican restaurant! So many options! I love all of their food I'm sad their table chips are not gluten free but I love the table beans, skinny margarita, shrimp tacos, fajita chicken Tijuana salad, mahi mahi fish tacos, fajitas, shrimp avocado salad. They are always very knowledgeable and accommodating!

Waiter was knowledgeable about gluten free options and when he didn’t know something, he went and asked. I have celiac disease and I did not get sick.

I have celiac (2 years) and so afraid to eat out, I asked for the manager and he was able to answer all my questions. Our waiter Lucas was so helpful and what he couldn’t answer he would find out. He let the cook know and wrote on my order “ need help “ and the cook made sure there was no cc. I loved everything I ate it’s been a very long time. Thank you all for taking care of me 🥰

Great experience, gluten free prominently marked on the menu, and the wait staff seemed pretty knowledgeable about how to navigate the offerings. Cross contamination occuring in fried items like the chips, they didn't have a separate fryer/prep area. This was clearly communicated, and for those who are okay with that it was a very gluten friendly location.

Awesome Tex-Mex and many Gluten Free options. The regular tortillas are NOT gluten free as they are fried in a shared fryer. However, the will make you baked chips or better yet they will let you bring your own. Queso, Salsa, and all sauces are gluten free. Fajitas were delicious. Cannot wait to have it again.

Oh my word- the (fluffy) corn tortillas are so good. I had to double check that they weren't flour. We shared the trio fajitas- beef, chicken and shrimp. I honestly didn't even get to the chicken. Shrimp and beef were amazing. The guacamole was great. I read a review about asking for baked chips, but I just brought in some of my own Siete chips. The beans that come as an appetizer were really delicious. Be careful not to fill up on those. 😊 Most of the menu comes gluten free and everything was great.

My husband and I are from Dallas and were so happy to find this place on our adventure. EVERYTHING is gluten free on the menu unless it’s marked with a “wheat” symbol. You’ll have to ask your waiter for baked chips since the ones they bring are fried in a shared fryer. Our waiter was very upbeat and made sure with his manager and the kitchen the items we ordered were gluten free. We both ordered an enchilada platter with rice and beans and they were delicious! Someone said the rice wasn’t gluten free but it is now! My husband has Celiac and would’ve reacted right away if it wasn’t and he was just fine. Reasonably priced and large portions as well. Definitely a must try when in this area.

I would have given a 5, the food was awesome, our server had a great attitude, and food came out fast. The only gripe I had was that the server himself wasn’t knowledgable about gluten free, however he may have been pretty new. He did however check with his manager on everything we ordered, and made sure everything was safe to eat. I will definitely go back!

Lupe is one of the few places I trust!
I saw another comment on the rice containing gluten, this is because it is not GF! I usually order fajitas corn tortillas and baked chips. I eat here several times a month and have never been sick. This is my go to favorite place to eat. I am extremely gluten sensitive.

Excellent gluten free service during vivid-19 take out period. Margaritas to go as well!!

Very knowledgeable, plenty of options. Definitely the best Tex-mex in town, even for folks who aren’t gluten free.
Yes
We ordered the chips baked. We tested my daughter’s food with the Nima, corn tortillas, rice and frijoles charros. Unfortunately they came back positive. She had already eaten the chips when we tested her food. She usually gets sick within 15 minutes so they appeared to be safe as she didn’t get ill, but I wouldn’t trust their food unless you are only gluten sensitive and have a higher tolerance.
No
Not celiac friendly. I received my meal with chips on the plate even after informing the waiter that I was Celiac. He seemed to be clueless. Very disappointed.
No
We called ahead and talk to the manager to make sure they could accommodate my daughter who has multiple food allergies. He mentioned that there was seasoning with soy in the rice but that was all. Turns out they fry all the chips and soy as well as use it in their marinades and with most of their meat. So with both gluten and soy as well as other allergies, it was very hard for us to eat here. The baked chips really weren't very good as others have stated. Overall, the food was fine but the process of trying to determine what was safe took so long that we probably would not eat here again.
Excellent service, but the menu isn’t very straight forward. The way it’s marked, you think nearly entire menu is gluten free. However, that’s not the case. I assumed the chips were safe and they were not, you have to request baked tortilla chips. Just ask the necessary questions and don’t get lax.

Great restaurant!! One of my favorite places. I eat the queso with taco meat, corn tortillas, beef fajitas and flan. Don’t eat the chips unless they are baked. Love the beans, salsa and rice. They are always very accommodating.

The food was excellent and authentic. The menu is extensive and creative. Nice atmosphere. After telling the waiter I have Celiac, the manager came out to explain their protocols and let me know that the owner’s daughter has Celiac. The place was packed at lunch time which indicates its popularity. I would definitely eat here again.

very good menu and options. sadly not all staff are up on it because the menu is so friendly.

I love this place. Every server I've ever had has always been very knowledgable about gluten. I've never been sick eating here. Their chips are fried in a fryer with gluten, but they will bake chips for you. If you call ahead they'll be ready when you arrive. The food is amazing! So are the margaritas!
Need to bring your own chips. Their chips are prepared in a shared fryer with floured Items. It is not indicated anywhere on their menu about the chips NOT being gluten free.
Yes
Clear menu, knowledgable staff. Only negative is chips are fried with other stuff.

These people really know what they are doing as far as gluten free prep. Plenty of options. One of my favorite places to eat when I'm in Houston and I have never gotten sick here.
WOW. Its the only way to describe it. I'm a 1st time customer and I'll be back. First time I've been to a resteraunt where everything on their menu IS gluten free, except the items marked with a wheat symbol. Make sure you tell the server that you are on a gluten free diet because they take it seriously, your food will be personally managed by a manager. Let them know you are a 1st time customer and they will give you a free sample of their fajitas. This was the BEST tasting Tex-Mex food I have eaten. It is very clean, inviting, friendly, and very well priced ($-$$). The only complaint is that it was very difficult to find. This resteraunt is a DEFINITE must. ;^)
We eat here so often thar the hosyess and manager know us by name! LOVE LOVE LOVE the food!!!
Lupes is my absolute favorite!!! BEST GF Mexican menu I have ever seen! Easy to read and know whats safe and whats not! You will never be disappointed here! Corn tortilla are homemade and YUMMY beyond belief! Tableside quac is the best! You WILL be hooked forever!!! Thanks Lupe!!!
A Mexican restaurant that understands about Celiac disease. Their menu is marked with the items that gluten cannot be removed. All other items do not contain gluten. They are very aware and it’s a safe place to go and not worry about getting ill!

I spoke with the manager before we were seated. The manager confirmed that most menu items don't contain any gluten ingredients. The wheat symbol notates the few menu items with gluten containing ingredients. HOWEVER, (a) their friers are shared, so all fried menu items, including the chips, are cross contaminated and therefore not safe for those with Celiac Disease, and (b) the corn tortillas are made in the same pans as the flour tortillas, so all menu items that include tortillas, e.g. fajitas, tacos, etc., are cross contaminated and therefore not safe for those with Celiac Disease. There is one exception for the tortilla rule the manager mentioned: the tortillas used for the enchiladas are premade corn tortillas from a bag, so the corn tortillas in the enchiladas should not be cross contaminated. The manager continued to advocate for me in the back of the house when they were prepping my food to avoid cross contamination.
Also, I just wasn't impressed with the taste of their food.

I am writing in the restaurant because I’m so frustrated. I have eaten here MANY times and been reassured by many employees that it was safe to eat fried foods. These include the ones marked on the menu as gluten free. There is no guarantee that these items are safe. The frier is “usually” chips but also could include an occasional item with gluten. I’ve not gotten sick before but as we know with celiac the reaction isn’t always immediate. Downright dangerous.

They had a dedicated fryer for chips. Waitress wasn’t sure but then went back and confirmed from the kitchen that did. Food was good. Didn’t get sick.
