7/18/22 update. This is one of the best places for GF in NB. Every time I go in, I’ve asked lots of questions about what was GF, asked to please keep mine separate and began by telling them I’m celiac. I’ve never had a problem. They happily change gloves when I ask and make sure to double check anything that might not be GF safe. I’ve never been sick and I go here frequently. I wish more places cared as much as these guys. I’d give 10 stars if I could.

Just an update, it’s still fantastic but just FYI if you have folks who aren’t keen on sushi, Ohana also has chicken, beef and pork options for your pleasure. 👍🏻 and the burrito is NOT wheat, it’s nori seaweed which is glutenfree. Just an FYI.

This place just opened not too long ago and I’ve already been there at least 5X. They understand celiac disease and take great care when preparing your food to ensure it is safe. I’ve had no problems asking for glove changes or cleaning the cutting knife. They also make sure I select ingredients without gluten just in case I’m not sure what is in the item. Every time I’ve been I’ve never been sick and I’ve loved all my food! Great place for lunch!!

I called Ohana once to ask what options were GF before heading over there and the person on the phone let out an audible sigh, said “hold on” and proceeded to yell to their teammate to ask which items are GF. They listed off a long list of items, but gave about a second in between each item and I couldn’t write anything down. I figured they might’ve been busy that night so I gave them another chance later down the line.

The second time, I asked the employee what’s GF and they didn’t make me feel confident their items were GF as they’d say things such as “I’m not sure. My mom eats XYZ though and she can’t have gluten”. While I appreciate the sentiment, I needed that employee to ask someone who has a solid answer or look in their ingredients list. I asked for a staff member that would know and they also weren’t confident.

I fear that pandemic has left us with staffing shortages and lower standards at many restaurants. Not a good thing if you have food allergies or Celiac.

I was ordering takeout and it was a case of really having to push them to do gluten free. The staff member gave me a blank stare when I asked for gf sauces. I insisted they change their gloves as I saw them touch wheat items. Another staff member smushed in next to the person helping me and started grabbing gluten ingredients and reaching over my food. I directed them to stop. I explained when I left that I was being picky because I didn’t want to get sick. Blank stare again.

I played it safe and only got items that I knew to be gf. I was really unsure about the sauces so I ordered them on the side. I am pretty sure one was soy sauce and not the safe gf sauce. I didn’t use it. I pulled out some salad dressing I had on hand.

I have eaten here before, and loved it. BUT the last time I noticed instead of dropping each item in a pile on the bowl they were spreading it out with the spoon and glove. I felt uneasy watching it but hoped it would be ok...almost everything is gluten free. But I was SO SICK for a couple of days.

I totally crave Ohana even to the point of trying it again today...But as I waited for my turn to order I noticed both young ladies were serving the same way. I suppose as they are doing this on the burritos (which is wheat) it's cross contaminating the line. Left empty handed.

I tired this place a few weeks ago. I didn’t try the food but I did have my self a bubble Thai Tea. Staff told me it was gluten free except for the bubble gummy ball. Tasted great. No reaction and I am extremely sensitive to gluten. I definitely need to try the food next time.
