Is there less than one star :-((((awful experience
The listing is misleading. I requested a gluten free menu and was handed a folder with a list of allergens. There are no procedures to avoid cross-contamination. Very few items do not contain gluten. I had a stuffed potato, some of which appear to be gluten-free. It tasted good and I had no reaction to it so I'm giving 3 stars.
I came here because it was on all the lists as having gluten free options. The manager handed me a xeroxed gf menu and then said we really don't have anything you can eat here unless you want to try a potato. We left since she wasn't really interested in our gf business.
Well.. When I asked for their gluten free menu they gave me the lunch menu.. the regular lunch menu. I asked the manager who said they didn't have one but thought the potatoes where gluten free. I asked if I could see the ingredients for their salad dressings and he said he couldn't get that for me. So, unless you're in the mood for a baked potato, I wouldn't bother.
They don't really have a GF menu, but a notebook with information and what menu items can be modified to be gluten free. They do carry a gluten free bread, Udis, and you can ask for it on any of their sandwiches. We talked to them about avoiding cross-contamination, but despite all that, my husband, who has celiac, was hurting and sick all night and into the next day, so we know that his food was contaminated. We will not be going back, that's for sure!
Great selection of Gluten Free Food!
The management bought a loaf of gluten free bread for me after we talked about gluten sensitivities. The sandwich they made was great! I was so impressed with their willingness to serve my family gluten free. Edited to add that I had a very bad cross contamination exposure the last time I went in. Management seems very interested in helping gluten free customers but the staff really need to be trained to handle food correctly.
McAlister's offers a huge menu and not only are so many options gluten-free (giant spuds, salads, all of the dressings), they carry Rudis gluten-free bread. Any of the sandwiches are available on it. I asked about cross contamination and was told that they change gloves and have a special cutting board to use for these orders. The bread is not sent through the toaster, rather grilled on the panini press to avoid the crumbs in the toaster.
We had lunch here and had the loaded potatoes. Excellent!! They were attentive to being allergic to gluten, were professional and courteous. Would highly recommend!
I went because of reviews on here from others-- thanks! The girl behind the counter was familiar with the term gluten-free. She brought out their 'allergy book'. They had prepared notes on which menu item was gluten-free. I took a chance and got the 'Savannah salad'. It was delicious. The restaurant is pleasant.
They DO NOT offer gluten-free breads at the Kingsport, TN location, AND the rice crispy treats on their gluten-free menu have barley in them. I had a allergic reaction to the Sherry shallot dressing on their Savannah Chopped salad which also appears on their gGF menu. Beware... Update, ordered the Spud Ole, and it was served to me w/ a ROTTEN potato. Just stay away. I tried again on 8/18...croutons despite a warning of gluten allergy & request for no croutons. 3 strikes & you're out. They clearly don't care.
AMAZING. And kids meals were all only $3.99 and not charged extra for gluten free! Then they gave us free desserts for being first time customers!
They don't have a Gluten-free menu.
I was told by the employee at the register they had no gluten free bread but are advertising they do. We ate a salad asked if dressing was gluten free he said he didn't know. All three of us ended up sick. For people with celiac disease this is not the place to go.
Big fat zero rating, but it made me give one star. I emailed corporate and asked if my St. Charles, MO location had GF bread. Guy said no but was sure I'd like any of their other choices. Um, no, I'd like a sandwich with bread I can eat. Why does it have to be so difficult all the time?! I don't think I'll go.
Ate at a MO location. Staff were helpful and attentive. GF menu posted prominently at counter. They have gluten free meats (including bacon!), sides and condiments. Delicious - ate there 3 times in a week and enjoyed 3 different meals - BLT, Horseradish-Cheddar Roast Beef With caramelized onions, stuffed baked potato and coleslaw. I'm making myself hungry. Go there today!
They do not actually have a gluten free menu. What they have is an allergy listing, which lists all their menu items and which common allergens are in each. There was one salad that was gluten free, baked potatoes, and one or two other sides. Very limited options. No GF bread for sandwiches. I ended up going somewhere else to eat.
We ate at McAlister's for lunch. My 2 yr old daughter has celiac disease. We shared the loaded nachos. They were delicious and a large portion. The boy who rang us up was very nice. I had read up on what was gf on their menu but he double-checked to make sure. I also requested a glove change and he put it in the computer and then went back to the kitchen area to make sure my meal would be prepared properly. We will definitely choose McAlister's again. There art a lot of gf options with salads, loaded potatoes, and nachos.
We stopped here on our way to Luray Caverns and I was very pleased with the options that I had. The girls at the counter were willing to let me see their allergy information (specifically gluten free) and I saw that I had a good number of options. I ended up getting the Chicken Caesar wrap but made as a sandwich and the gluten free bread was delicious. It was reasonably priced as well. Would definitely recommend if you're taking a road trip! Not sure about cross contamination in the kitchen, but I had no symptoms afterwards!
We stopped here on our way home from Virginia Beach. The staff is not very knowledgeable about gluten free eating (other than that they, in fact, have a GF menu). They were very accommodating with my requests. The manager oversaw our order and caught a mistake and had them toss it and prepare it again. The main options are baked potato, salad, and lunch meat (no bread). My thoughts - It's OK to eat here, just be very verbal about your requests and ask lots of questions.
Staff members were very attentive and offered to change their gloves before I even asked. They have plenty of Gf options at reasonable prices.
