Severely glutened, order the gf pita wrap with chicken salad. My sides were the avocado plus Basmati rice. Sick. Not sure gf markings on menu are trustworthy. Ordered chocolate cake but will not eat after being glutened.

Tons and tons of gluten free options. They have certified GF pita and their beef & lamb options were gluten free. They did mention the grilled chicken NOT being gluten free, but I didn’t dig into why. They have many options clearly labeled on the cold “bar,” but high likelihood of cross contamination from dishes being so close together. All in all, great meal!

Items in deli case are marked gluten free
middle eastern food: eat in and take out
buy deli case items by the pound
Large gluten free selection as Mediterranean food is often gluten friendly. Large case of gluten free desserts. Also have gluten free pita for platters and gluten free crust available for their fatayers. Great options for a gluten free person. Cross contamination does not bother me so did not ask about safety of kitchen keeping things separate.

Although the food is well labeled, the staff is not very familiar with gf. There is a huge chance for cross contact. I ate here and got VERY sick. All good I ordered I was labeled gf. The cashier noted my “allergy” and there was a gf sticker on my plate. Unfortunately I didn’t fair well. Use caution.

Lots of gluten free options, even gluten free pita that is prepared separately (most of the time!). Staff is very VERY poorly trained in allergens though. I ordered a choose 4 (was sure to pick items that specifically labelled no gluten) and requested the gluten free pita. My plate arrived with almost everything correct, and even a "gluten free" sticker on the plate...however, they mixed up one of my items with what I recognized as wheat bulgar. If it weren't for the allergen I wouldn't have even brought it up the mix up bc I know all their items are delicious. But that darn bulgar was creeping into all my other items, rendering the whole plate compromised. I asked the girl who brought my order out about it and she said, "well the plate says gluten free" I told her it was probably the gf pita I requested but I was sure that other item was clearly gluten. She continued to argue with me that it was what the ticket said and that it must be right I said, "so you're telling me I'm stuck with a plate I can't eat"...SHE SAID, "yeah I guess so". Any who, after that annoying interaction with the girl that clearly has no customer service skills or allergens knowledge, I went inside for help and the manager on duty was more than happy to remedy the situation and was prompt in replacing all my items on a brand new plate. So basically, just be very careful when your food comes out, double check your items, maybe even be doubly sure you are communicating to the staff when ordering that you have a gluten allergy. I've never had any issues the other times I have been here and it is one of my faves.

Yes!!! A restaurant that understands how to label their food! There is a long case filled with salads and foods and each one has a label stating if it contains or doesn't contain gluten ingredients. I was so excited that they had GF pita bread! This restaurant was a GF/DF eaters dream!

Amazing selection of GF food and desserts by JP’s bakery. They also make their own certified GF pita bread.
Yes
Everything is so well-labeled, including the on-campus location and when you order catering. Gf and soy-free dessert options were great!

Delicious gryo-style pizza made on their gluten-free pita. Lots of gluten-free dessert options.

For a restaurant that makes so much of their gluten free pita, their staff is grossly under trained. When we asked the person at the register for a gluten free menu, she replied that she hadn't seen it in a while, and couldn't find it after asking several of her collegues. We spoke to a different employee at the register and asked her dish by dish what was gluten free. She quickly became exasperated, and when asked if the marinated kabobs were gluten free, she responded, "Yes, it's beef!" When we got our food, it arrived with the wrong hummus and we went back up to the counter to point it out. The same woman from before was still irritated and didn't say anything as she loaded a to-go container with the gluten free hummus we had ordered. I think the food here is delicious, but they obviously are not concerned with the safety of their Celiac guests.
They make a lot of effort to label things as gluten free, get GF certification for their pita, have many options, etc. But then most of their food is displayed deli-style, with no segregation between things with and without gluten. I ended up with regular couscous in my supposedly gluten-free taboulleh. Skip this place until they figure out cross contamination.
No
Med Deli was one of my favorites pre-celiac but I was pretty disappointed with the experience when we went back...nothing was marked on the menu (though I hear it was marked in the case, that's good to know) and when we asked at the counter the server didn't really tell us what was gluten free. They say on one menu that the fatayer dough can be gluten free, but say nothing about what fillings can be gluten free! Then my husband gave up and ordered a salad but they brought him the wrong one. Worth going to get the pita bread but if it's busy and the server isn't knowledgeable it's pretty frustrating.
Lots of choices and even desserts. Everything was labeled! Cabbage rolls and veggie lentil salad were great!
The food is delicious and cheap which is great but I don't always feel safe eating at Med Deli. Ordering is a rushed process and I'm not always confident they got my order right. I have eaten here multiple times and I have only been sick once. Ordering from the deli case is easy because everything is labeled but I usually stick with a Greek salad.
Amazing food and delicious gf pita bread! You can even buy frozen pita bread in their market next door
Generally I've found them great with labeling, but had a bad experience at an event I attended in their back room where something was mislabeled. I wound up eating a ton of an appetizer made on regular wheat flour bread. Good reminder to always double check at a place that is not exclusively gf. It was an honest mistake, but I do wish they had taken it a little more seriously when I brought it to their attention-- although I guess what could anyone do at that point after the fact?

Excellent gf pitas!
Lots of gf options, gf pitas, clearly labeled

Lots of gluten free options, marked in the deli case, but staff was haphazard about it....delivered all GF plates with regular pita.
Great pita. Lots of gluten free options. Highly recommend. Can be a very busy place.
Updated review. Had to take off two stars not because they messed up our last two orders, but because of the horrendous customer service we received. They were angry and downright unkind. FAIL. even though I love their food, I won't ever go back.
Omg. The GF fatayer is to die for. And kids love dipping with GF pita. You need to ask for it, since they always keep it frozen. Get some hot and get a bag to take home.
My best friend was so excited to take me here b/c it's her favorite place AND Celiac friendly. Falafel on gfree pita is really yummy with no additional cost. Other dishes and sides are clearly labeled and very good!
Lunch was cheap and awesome!!!!! Highly recommend.
Favorite restaurant! Everything in the deli case is clearly marked gluten free and staff is knowledgeable.
Just had lunch and enjoyed the gluten free pita. It was also great that the young man at the register was very knowledgable about what had gluten on the menu.
Wow, they have really expanded their options! They even make a GF tabbouleh with quinoa. GF pitas are not bad, and they had a GF chocolate cake. Lots of clearly labeled options.
a long time favorite in downtown Chapel Hill. reasonable prices for great food. very casual atmosphere. lots of things come w/ pita bread on the plate, so be sure to tell them no pita. if you can't find parking on the street, park behind the deli in a lot on rosemary st.
