Something got me here, and I’m not sure what. The menu is marked, I asked questions, I even skipped the gf bread...the manager brought my plate out separate...and still, gluten. It was light, but contaminated...so it doesn’t matter. I had the chowder, and the eggplant stack. My theory is that when the entire menu is marked, the establishment becomes less diligent about XC...this seems to be more of a lifestyle choice gf-avoidance place. Also, it is a chain...so maybe other locations are safer.

The eggplant stack was PHENOMENAL!! The rosemary tots were also amazing! They use a designated fryer, so I felt very safe. The waitress was awesome and the manager double checked that everything was safe! I’ll definitely be back!!!!!

They are very helpful and knowledgeable. I ordered the fish and chips not realizing they would leave off the tartar sauce because it contained malt vinegar. I asked for some mayo on the side as a substitute and the waiter was nice enough to mix it with some relish and made me some GF tartar sauce! The only thing they deep fry with gluten is their waffle fries. I was told they give that it's own dedicated fryer so everything else isn't cross contaminated.

A huge GF selection, all clearly labeled. I was able to get the “breaded” fish sandwich (sans tarter sauce) with onion rings (dedicated fryer). Very friendly staff!

Fantastic all the way around! They have a dedicated fryer. I had the fish and chips "the best ever"! Staff is great and well informed. Our server let me know the tarter sauce was not gf but offered to make some for me. Amazing! Well worth checking out!

My 11-year old son has celiac disease so we found Tavern in the Square on the Find Me Gluten Free app. We were visiting Salem for the day and needed a place for lunch for our party of 6. The gluten-free menu options were extensive, my son was thrilled to try onion rings for the first time. We all loved our meal, our server was attentive to the gluten-free needs of my son, our food was hot and delicious. Great place to eat with lots of gluten-free options.

The menu is extensive with so many choices you just don't typically find gluten-free. The fried pickles were delicious, as were the turkey tips and avocado steak salad. Our trio agreed it was one of the best gf meals we've had! And the staff was fun, accommodating and knowledgeable. We'll be looking to come back some day.

This place has an EXTENSIVE GF menu! So there are a ton of choices. Also, you can get French fries, sweet potato fries, tator tots, fried pickles, onion rings -- all the tasty fried foods that you typically cannot get! We had a burger & fries and it was great. Everyone loved their meals (steak tips, turkey tips, etc.). I would have given this place 5 stars but the one GF dessert which was the Greek Yogurt Brûlée was awful. We ordered 2 for the table and out of 7 people No One liked it. It was bad -- just like eating some Greek yogurt from the supermarket. So I don't recommend doing GF dessert there -- other than that everything was very good (drinks, appetizers, entrees and service). So all they need to do is offer a better GF dessert and this place would be 5 stars!

Lots of choices that you don't normally get - like onion rings. I had to have my mom taste mine to make sure they were different than the regular ones (because they were so good it was hard to tell!). The part that could be improved is the kids menu - a gluten free pizza or pasta would be great - or even gf/df chicken tenders.

We have 2 kids (9 and 12) and an adult with celiac. The Tavern has GF buns, fish and chips, and pizza!! This is a huge GF menu. They have outstanding sides Including fries, tater tots and everything almost that is on the normal menu! They messed up once on a GF meal and they comped it and immediately corrected the issue. However, we have been there many times with outstanding service. They take the GF menu very serious and this is our go to restaurant along with Woodman's in Essex!

Contrary to another post, tavern in the square does NOT have gluten free friers. Went once when I was first gluten free and the server told me they had a separate fryer. She must not go in the kitchen. Ever. Went back a second time and asked for fries after telling our server I was gluten free. She stopped me and said they only have one frier and it is not gluten free. The second server was wonderful to mention this and also double and triple check with the manager. The friers are most certainly NOT gluten free. Would give them great ratings based on second waitresses' commitment to accuracy but the first waitress who made this awful mistake drags down the whole gluten free endeavor. The team needs to be better educated on what cross contamination really means.

I used to eat/drink here all the time, and one day they came out with a GF menu...and that was the last time i will ever eat there. They have no idea what they're doing in terms of GF. Served me items from GF menu that were the regular version. I sat forever for the waitress to come back so I could question it while my friend ate her meal. The waitress was clueless, the manager came out, took the food away, put more in...it was a whole embarrassing ordeal. By the time my dry chicken breast sandwich came out my friend was done eating. They didn't offer to comp anything or do anything for us. Bottom line-if you truly have to be GF, don't eat here.

I visited the tavern over this past weekend. My husband and I almost did not go because of the review on here, but I looked up reviews on other sites and they seemed pretty good. I'm so glad that we gave it a chance! There were several appetizers, sandwiches, meals, and sides to chose from. We had the classic nachos and I had a cheeseburger on a gluten free bun with a side of roasted vegetables. French fries are not made in a dedicated fryer, but with all the other options I was okay with that.

Great food. Acknowledgment of my need to be strict Gluten free by the server. Confirmed separate deep fryer so no cross contamination. I ordered the burger and fries and it was cooked perfectly.

Verified Separate GF Fryer. Daughter was happy with all of the GF options here. Pretty much everything can be made gluten free. She ended up getting French fries and guacamole- both came out with an allergy flag.
