Update their menu has changed and they got rid of the nachos and pub cheese fries! Nooooo so many Gf foods are now gone I don’t get it:(

Their menu changed - no GF fried foods available. Gf marked on menu. Seems like decent options. No pizza. I will modify my review once I go there.

Staff were very knowledgeable and they follow good practices like having a dedicated fryer. They had lots of options and the food was tasty and nicely presented. It’s nice to feel safe and be able to enjoy a meal. Nothing fancy but my dairy-allergic husband and I were happy with our meals.

It’s hard to find fish and chips and these were good! I went on my birthday and they brought me a birthday ice cream sundae (they carded me when I ordered my cider). The waitress was fantastic - I can’t say anything bad.

Very tasty and good portion sizes! I had a yummy French dip on gf bread and fries. My gluten eating hubby said it was one of the best burgers he's had. They had a nice selection of gf options and my waitress understood my needs. I had no adverse reaction.

Very safe place for those with Celiac… in fact my server was also a Celiac and was well informed about all of the protocols followed. Had a great pesto chicken sandwich and fries! Highly recommend!

The staff are friendly (our waiter was fantastic) and knowledgeable. I was ensured that items are prepared with cross contact prevention in mind (using separate utensils, assembling in a separate space, using a fryer dedicated to gf foods). There are lots of options so the menu will surely satisfy everyone in your party, gluten free and non gluten free alike. Highly suggest!

Came here for lunch today and it was so delicious. There are so many options of gluten free or can be changed to gluten free. I got the French dip sandwich and friend pickles and both were amazing. The gluten free bun didn’t fall apart, even when dipped in the au jus, and the texture wasn’t bad at all. I am a very sensitive celiac and I didn’t have any reactions at all

I was very excited to see so many gluten free and gluten free possible choices on the menu! When I asked about. Dedicated fryer, I was told that yes, the kept one fryer for use with gluten free battered foods and French fries. I ordered an appetizer for lunch, chicken tenders! They were amazing! Our waitress was very knowledgeable and told me that care would be taken in preparing my meal. The iced tea was also delicious!

I had a wonderful experience here. They have a lot of GF options that you rarely find at other places and everything was so good. I was able to have fried pickles for the first time and I really didn’t know what I was missing! The chicken tenders and pizza are also delicious.

I had a very disappointing meal at the village tavern. The gluten free chicken tenders had onion powder in them so I couldn't get them I had the worst burger of my life here and very dry rice and steamed broccoli with nothing on them to make them palatable. The bun fell apart in my hands even more so than gluten free breads usually do and it was just an unpalatable meal.
The server was very nice and seemed to be trying very hard to make the meal a success but they were way under staff and we had a very long wait.
Not one person was wearing a mask and there was no social distancing. I don't recommend this place at all.

So I went here 2 different days. I have a dairy intolerance and a gluten intolerance. The waitress was very nice and the food tasted great however I later found out that 2 items I ordered ended up having milk in them after she praised about how cautious they are and have a separate area dedicated to allergies. I found this out because the second day we went to order the same thing and the second waitress told us the items contained milk. This was upsetting and scary because if it was someone with a allergy it could of been a serious problem. I suffered the whole night because of their mistake. I did let the manager know but he seemed to have cared less so for 20$ for each plate of food and carelessness I won’t recommend this place. They have a lot of gluten free options but just be careful.

Was really looking forward to eating here. Asked the hostess about a GF menu and he pointed out how the menu worked. Specified gluten free when we ordered and asked for no onions on the gf burger. when our food came out there was a little flag in the gluten free burger so we didn't think anything was off until we got the bill and noticed we weren't charged for the gluten free bun. When I asked the waitress about it she said she thought the allergy was onions. The manager comped our meals but that doesn't help the 6 hours my husband spent violently I'll or the non-refundable tour we missed, or the embarrassment of stopping to vomit in a sidewalk trash can because he couldn't make it to the parking garage. What if this had been a life threatening allergy. Moral of the story - maked doubly sure the wait staff is clear on the order!

I always get SO excited when there’s GF chicken tenders on a menu. I got the buffalo tenders and they were so amazing, I haven’t had anything like that since before I was diagnosed with celiac over 10 years ago. Definitely am going back!

The food here was amazing!! Their gluten free chicken tenders have a nice layer of crisp, and they were so flavorful even without any sauces! The fries were really good! They were not too crispy, but crispy enough to have this really nice crunch! They also have gluten free flat crust pizza, but I haven’t tried that yet. Along with that, I had no symptoms from cross contamination! Overall, I loved the food, it was amazing!

I recently rediscovered the village and was very impressed. A few years ago they didn’t have many options but now have dedicated fryers! They are able to make gf chicken tenders, fried pickles, fries! They also have gf pizza crust and buns available. The buffalo chicken pizza is one of my go-to’s and the truffle fries are to die for! They also carry ciders and hard seltzers- not positive about gf beer.

My wife ordered gluten free clearly identified dishes. french fries and fried chicken. we ask twice to the waitress if they are 100% sure. they we're aware of her cealiac disease since they ask her. they confirm that every thing is safe. but it WERE NOT. my wife was sick a couple of hours later... I'm very disappointed.

The steak tips are not gluten free. They have a small amount of soy sauce in them. My server admitted it when I asked why the steak tips are marked GF online, but not on the restaurant menu. I was shocked. She said “there is a girl here with celiac and she eats them and doesn’t get sick.” I was so disappointed.

Really enjoyed the nachos. Burger was good, but a bit dry. Gf bun was good. Lots of GF options: appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, main dishes. GF options are marked on the menu. Our server confirmed that the fries are in a separate fryer. Unfortunately, they were out of the GF pale ale when I visited.

North Shore Roast Beef 3-way. As far as finding these available on a gluten free bun (Udi's here), this is one of the better ones. It's only available on the weekend though, so be advised. There's a separate fryer, but you might have to request it. Ghostfish pale ale in cans. A lot of other items are gluten free or can be made that way and are clearly marked on the menu. Ask regarding the burgers though; about half the configurations have delicious looking fried things on them that you might need to omit.
Always good to see a pub with all the options.

We ate there today and I had a great experience! I had a burger on a GF free bun with sweet potato fries (prepared in a seperate GF fryer). Our waiter Chris was friendly and knowledgable about what was safe for me to eat. We will definitely go again!!
They have an extensive GF menu, but ask about EACH. INDIVIDUAL. ITEM! I ordered takeout of a French dip sandwich (comes with fries or other side), poutine, and the Bavarian pretzel bites. (I didn’t ask about a dedicated fryer, as my cross-contamination sensitivity threshold is pretty high, just don’t tell my doctor I said so.) The menu is clearly marked, but as I wrapped up my order, I said, “And that’s all gluten free, please.” The waitress immediately said that that’s fine, except for the pretzels; they’re not gluten free and it’s a “typo on the menu.” I really appreciate that she was knowledgeable enough to catch that, and was upfront and honest, but that’s a big problem to me.
Flavor wise, my sandwich was delicious but they left off the horseradish cream for some unknown reason and they forgot the side for my sandwich. Cost-wise, it was expensive enough that the menu shouldn’t have potentially dangerous typos and my side should have been in my takeout order.
As of November 28, 2018 there is no dedicated fryer. Not sure why they took it away but your only options are a bunless burger or salad🤷🏼♀
June 2017 -- Ate here twice during my stay this year. Now they have dedicated fryers so I was able to order sandwiches on their gluten free buns (which are very good) and had fries on the side. They also have Angry Orchard if you're in the mood for some hard cider. Sometimes the wait staff is unsure of things, but they will get the manager to help you if necessary. Go and enjoy!
--June 2015 -- I ate here three times during my stay in Salem. The GF bun was so good that I actually checked with the waitress to make sure they didn't give me a gluten bun!! I had the pulled pork sandwich with the sauce on the side. I got it with rice as they use shared fryers for the french fries.
The waitress on day 1 wasn't so sure about GF, so she got the manager to assist. If your server doesn't know, then the manager will definitely take care of you.
I'll be dining here again when I return next year.
Yes
The Tavern has a pretty good burger. The outdoor seating is a gamble because the weather in Salem is not reliable. Bring a sweater.
The gluten free buns were just okay. Veggie burgers are not gluten free but have a choice of gluten free bread which is very misleading. Most foods here are fried or breaded.
No
FYI village tavern staff: a gluten allergy means you shouldn't touch the outside of my glass with your beer soaked hands. Sick as a dog today and didn't even eat there.
Very misleading. There is very few gluten free options here. And the waitress knew next to nothing about the menu items. They brought out my plate heaping with French fries which were not gluten free. Very disappointed. Though, I will admit, the burger was tasty and the gluten free bun is far better than some I've had.
Great Gluten free burger buns, and awesome burgers!
