My go-to for fish and chips. Have never experienced a problem eating here.

Coeliac partner went in to buy fish & chips 26/1/2024 Friday evening, ordered chips and forgot to tell them GF. The female cook, had already put the basket of fries in the general fryer and after he told her GF she promptly tipped the chips from the general fryer basket into the GF basket and put it into the gf fryer. When Partner told her that she couldn't do that, she replied that the food had only been in the general fryer for a few seconds (actually 30).
So he informed her that she couldn't do that and that she had now contaminated the GF fryer. She was defensive and replied that he had not ordered GF. HE told her that he couldn't eat the chips and that she had contaminated the fryer and that she would be poisoning every other Cealiac that comes in.

Asked if celiac friendly they said yes in the car home had half the chips straight away tummy cramps and felt so sick so even though it is a separate fryer some cross contamination has occurred

Love this place! Not many fish and chip shops have a seperate fryer or are aware of coeliac, let alone a whole gluten free menu! The chips are great, battered fish can be a bit hit or miss but honestly can't complain considering the effort they put in to provide gluten free options in a regular fish and chip shop. Also the prices are pretty cheap! Only other option I'm aware of in chch for gf fish and chips is Herba Gourmet which is super expensive

I asked if they were safe for coeliacs in which they said they were. Unfortunately the next morning my son had serious stomach cramps, which could only have been a result of eating these fish and chips. They have a separate gluten free menu and they reported to have a separate fryer.

Delicious celiac-friendly menu full of your classic fish & chips options. Was very exciting for someone who loved fish and chips before finding out they were celiac.
I saw another review saying they got glutened. It might be because they didn't specifically ask for the gluten free options as they have a normal/gluten-full menu too with basically the same options.
Did not get glutened at all after eating here :)

Hi all,
I've been eating gf from there for about 8 yrs now. I am severe coeliac and often very sick after eating out other places.
I have never been sick from 1040's food, an I eat alot of fish n chips lol.
Very nice 'normal' fantastic tasting batter too, not like others that are thick and doughy.

Coeliac safe! We have missed fish and chips, it was nice to feel normal again. They tasted like normal fish and chips and were a fair price.

I was badly glutened from fish and chips here.
I called to let them know so they could have a look at their processes to avoid others getting sick.
The owner took no responsibility, they would not even refund the $20!!
I would never recommend 1040 Takeaway to anyone who is gluten intolerance. Gluten free from here is risky.

Tried a gf fish and a chicken burger, both were really good! Definitely the best gluten free fish and chips I've had!

the best place in Christchurch for gluten free Chinese meals, or Fish and Chips by far. 1040 takeaways has a massive menu for gluten free, cooked in a separate fryer. Also they will cook anything on the menu as Chinese. I would rate 1040 with 10 stars
Real fish and chips ... has been so long since I have had a meal like this. Local cod and potato fritters are amazing

Awesome place! So many options and they're all delicious!
Thanks to all the reviews suggesting we stop here, otherwise we wouldn’t have! Great selection of gf items - fish n chips; hamburgers, chicken strips, fritters, donuts, etc. see pic of menu & cost - it was also a lot cheaper than we were expecting.
Note: cash only, but there’s an atm down the street. Worth going to the atm for!

I eat here regularly and haven’t had any issues! Love their potato fritters.

Was great. Fantastic tasting food. As someone else said, a bit 'rough round the edges' but really tasty. Husband was in heaven
Never had a problem with their fish and chips. They also have spring rolls! And potato fritters. The batter is delicious and crunchy and these are the best chips!

We love this place for proper Coeliac-friendly food. The shop itself looks a bit rough round the edges but don't let that put you off. Separate fryers for those who are GF and yummy food. Recommend!
