Gluten Free at Chipotle

Chipotle does not have a gluten free menu but instead has a list of gluten-containing ingredients to avoid. Cross-contamination is a concern, however, so let the person taking your order know that you are gluten free and if you need them to take the proper precautions.

From their website: "If you avoid gluten, don't eat our flour tortillas. If you are highly sensitive to gluten and would like us to change our gloves, just let us know at the start of your order. You should be aware items containing corn, including corn tortillas (chips, soft corn, and crispy corn tortillas) and corn salsa, may have a small amount of gluten from potentially co-mingling with gluten-containing grains in the field."

They took precautions and me seriously, there is still a slight risk of contamination but I haven’t had any problems at this location and they are very nice about it and well trained.

Entire staff changed gloves, ladles, washed hands, grabbed a new shredded cheese container to prevent cross contamination and made sure if anything was touched accidentally it was restarted. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff!

Eat here regularly with no issues. Servers change spoons.. gloves.. get soon items from the back...and wipe down board each time. Have never complained or even had an issue no matter the line. This was my first restaurant I sent to after my diagnosis and they were great to deal with.

AMAZING!!! DeAngelo and the rest of the employees here were beyond caring and diligent in making my first experience here a fantastic one! They made me every ingredient I wanted from scratch in the back and pulled fresh veggie toppings out of the fridge so that none of the ingredients had a chance of being cross contaminated on the line. It took about 15 minutes, but was well worth it to ensure there was no cross contamination. They also changed their gloves and washed their hands for the whole process. I asked them to do all of those things, and they assured me that they follow that protocol normally for allergy customers (I’m Celiac and have a dairy allergy) I liked that I could see every part of what they were doing and it calmed my anxiety a TON. Food was delicious and I will absolutely be returning to this location again.

I was only recently diagnosed, so this is all new to me. I ordered a burrito bowl (no tortilla). Very good! I told them I have a gluten allergy. They changed out all of the utensils they would use, and changed their gloves! Very much appreciated! Thank you!

The new manager at this location has family members with Celiac and other food allergies, some even Anaphylaxis. She has obviously trained her staff because they are AWESOME every time I visit!

Beware of cross contamination here! I got really sick after eating a salad and bowl. Told the staff I have Celiac and allergy to gluten. He changed his gloves but the spoons that they use were not changed and I got very ill. I think the spoons touched a flour tortilla and that same spoon was used to make my salad.

When I said I was gluten free, they were very careful and even changed out the spoons for the ingredients. Very tasty and very safe. Chipotle is very open on their website about allergens. Thank you - staff was great and so was the food!

They don’t understand anything about celiac disease, they use the same gloves to prepare salads than floor tortilla burritos. I felt bad after I ate here.

I’m very sensitive to cross contamination but haven’t had any issues here. At any chipotle, just make sure they change gloves and wash hands, don’t get lettuce or cheese as a topping because they reach into those when prepping burritos (flour tortilla)for people. I

It’s like all of the other Chipotles out there. We had one experience when the people weren’t very accommodating but we still got what we ordered. Ask a lot of questions before getting food and they will try their best.

The first employee I spoke with didn’t know the difference between flour and corn tortillas. Told them I was allergic to gluten but didn’t take any special precautions to prevent cross contamination. Other workers there seemed to know more about gluten allergies, but I received pretty poor service and all around.

I used to come here three or four times a week, I’m not kidding. They were one of the only places around that I could go to without making me sick. However, about a year or so ago, most of the staff I knew left this location. Ever since the turnover, I have gotten sick EVERY TIME I’ve gone. And I make it quite clear how sick I get, I even give them absurd instructions to try to avoid contamination, and still. I went here for years before this became an issue, and now I can’t go here at all. Very sad for me.

Have eaten there a few times with my son, who has celiac. They are courteous about washing hands and changing gloves when asked. He has never had a reaction after eating there. I ate at this location once without my son, and saw the server scrape rice off a tortilla back into the serving dish when a customer requested the other type of rice - made me worried about the potential for cross contamination even with the precautions taken.

Not only do they flop the flour tortillas out of the warmer right in front of the bowls of rice but I saw the server put a lil too much chicken in the kids quesadilla right before me in line and took a lil chicken back off of the dish and then put it back into the chicken pan to serve to the next person.

Chipotle is one of my favorite restaurants! I feel confident eating here, and it’s one of my go-to spots in a pinch. However, (as some of the other reviews mentioned) it is important to know what to say! It’s pretty much the same for all Chipotle locations- ask them to change their gloves for your allergy. In my experience (with many, many chipotles) there have never been any issues at all with this. Then, that same person will take you down the line and take care of your food. Usually, the only ones that mess this up are the newbies, but the manager will almost always step in if there is concern. Please remember- YOU NEED TO ASK FOR ACCOMMODATIONS. For example, if you are more sensitive, ask them to change the spoons in the containers. Also, in terms of cross contamination, it is essential that you have them get ingredients like cheese and lettuce from under the counter! As always, go with you gut- if it feels unsafe, get a new one made. Personally, I’ve never gotten sick at a Chipotle, but I do understand how it could happen. Although it is unfortunate that there has to be these reminders, I have had really awesome experiences with Chipotle. It has saved me when traveling so many times, and I feel very safe when going there.

Highly recommend the Chipotle on 21St St. Newark, Ohio. They go above and beyond to wipe everything down, get clean utensils, and change out condiments before preparing a delicious bowl of gluten free goodness....+chips. All workers, and owner, are accommodating to any of my celiac needs. They are knowledgeable and KNOW which condiments are GF and are willing to swap out new containers of fresh selections free of contamination. I have often just asked workers to change their gloves, as they are the only fear I have of getting contamination. The “burrito tortilla“ is definitely not gluten free. I have never been ill after eating at this location. I eat there at least 2 times a week. The price is also hard to beat!

When I told the counter person I had Celiac Disease and must eat gluten free she immediately changed her gloves and wiped down the entire counter and then asked if I would like my burrito bowl made from any of the items in the back (the kitchen). This would mean that these were never touched and had no chance of cross contamination. Excellent service.

Fantastic food but dont go when theyre busy, and like the other person said - dont get toppings they grab with gloves. Even then its still risky if youre as sensitive as me, I usually feel insanely bloated after eating it (im no stranger to Mexican food)

Love the idea of Chipotle, but as a Celiac...can’t do. Watched in line the server dipping the serving spoon into the food, then touching the spoon to the flour tortilla, then back into the food. I left...too bad because I really want d to support their business practice.
