Akemi is a wonderful addition to Castro Valley. I really enjoy their veggie box-- it always comes with different types of things in it. It always comes with a set of six mango-asparagus tempura rolls. When I tell them I'm gluten free and ask for no tempura, they make a replacement! They also provide gluten free soy sauce.
I like it when they do tamago or seaweed salad, but there are others they do like pickled daikon, avocado, and cucumber that are also good. Plus, inari, avocado rolls, and ginger. The inari (bean curd pouches with rice) are NOT certified gf. I didn’t have a reaction at all, but want to mention that just in case.
The service is friendly and the outdoors seating is very nice.
The pricing is high-- it shocks me for a dish without fish. But the sushi is good. It takes about 25-40 minutes for this dish to be ready each time. They are making each item from fresh when ordered.
ADA access is not great here. It's weird-- they have a wheelchair accessible sign outside of the doors, but there's no button to push. That always confuses me. I use a service dog and often rely on door buttons, so this is always something that peeves me.
