— Gluten-free items are marked on the main menu
We love Amelia’s. Yes we have to avoid the mole and the cracked corn tortillas, but we eat the street tacos and other menu items often, with no problems.
Absolutely amazing food! So many gf choices, and the corn tortillas taste like soft flour tortillas.
Update 2017: Still love this place! Most items are gluten free and the sauces are thickened with rice flour! Only one sauce is not gluten free: Mole Poblano. I love the chili relleno. Do not eat burritos (flour tortilla), anything fried like chips or tostadas, and the couple dishes that serves the extra large corn tortilla. The fresh corn tortillas brought to your table when you sit down are gluten free. I talked directly to Amelia (yes, THE Amelia who developed all the recipes) to verify what is gluten free. I don't know how to translate the word "gluten" into Spansh, so I made sure to also say no wheat, rye, barley. A tip for any restaurant: If your food server doesn't understand gluten free, ask for a manager. Once Amelia explained to me what I could eat and what to avoid, I have never had a problem. The food is delicious, and yes, I eat here all the time safely, and I have Celiac Disease.
I have no idea what the others who are here use as a standard for gluten free establishments. they didn't know what gluten was. they have a shared frier..... their 'cracked corn tortilla' is a half corn / half flour tortilla. the service was slow. this was an awful experience. do not come here if you are gluten free.
If you haven't eaten at Amelia's you missing a real treat. They have the absolutely best Mexican food around. Almost the entire menu is Celiac friendly, no issues here. This place is a real jewel that shouldn't be missed. Oh, and the staff is great. They do take out, which is great because you'll want to take some of their homemade tortillas home.
