Great place, dedicated fryer. Gluten free flatbread, tacos, nachos, fries. Stormalong Cider and Ground breaker certified gf beer available. Inclusion pale ale and IPA #5. Very cautious about cross contamination. Nice atmosphere, on the river. Great patio and outdoor seating. I spoke to the owner and they follow a strict protocol on the flatbreads. They even have their own shelf in the oven. I saw someone was told differently but that is simply not the case.
Incredibly nice staff. Knowledgeable on their accommodations and on waiter shift switch made sure they reassured allergies were clearly communicated! Outdoor and indoor areas are beautiful. My only hesitation as a celiac is the pizza offerings are in cooked in the same ovens and/or at least not in a separate pan, as far as I was informed. As a celiac, maybe too sensitive, this would rule out all the pizzas for me which is a sizeable portion of the menu. GF chicken nachos were excellent; gf corn tortilla chicken tacos just not for though.
Nice to see a few gf beers that aren’t ciders.
Honestly, just grateful this place exists. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about gluten in cooking. They have a separate fryer and take precautions. They have a variety of gluten free options. I got the cajun chicken nachos with house-made chips. Partner got the tacos. The food was solid, but even if it wasn’t, I don’t think I’d really care. Finally we have a low-stakes easy place people will want to hang at that is both safe and enjoyable for folks with celiac. It’s a great place for dates, drinks with friends, etc.
Apponaug also has three beers from groundbreaker brewing in portland and I think the beers rotate (?). FWIW, they have a pale ale, IPA, and brown ale each sold in 16 oz cans. Also had a few ciders, don’t remember which ones, wine, cocktails, two mocktails. And for your company, also have two NA beers from Athletic in addition to Apponaug’s brews.
Price-wise gf beers are about $10 and food is what you’d expect ($12-$18 depending on what you want). Apponaugs brews range $2-$8 depending on the brew and size of the glass.
Fantastic atmosphere, great food, and multiple options! Been many times and never gotten sick. Dedicated frier means I even get to enjoy their fantastic fries (seriously dangerously good), tasty nachos, loaded tots etc. Gluten free option for some of their pizzas as well and the crust is actually very good- they have gone through a few different ones and clearly constantly trying to improve.
Also always have a few different gf beers available.
Highly recommend!
