They included a sticker on my plate that said it was an allergy. I thought this was a great way for the staff to keep track of it.
Their menu includes a gluten free label as well as a ‘GM’ label saying it can be modified to be gluten free

Their menu is well marked GF for items that are naturally gluten free and GM for items that can be made gluten free with a modification. It’s usually just as simple as switching out a brioche bun for a gluten-free bun. I had the seafood enchiladas and they were amazing!

We stopped in here on a rainy Saturday. The menu had a lot of Gluten Free options. It was hard to choose. I went with the protein power bowl with tuna. It was delicious. Plenty of fresh veggies, the tuna was well seasoned and cooked well and the black rice was amazing. Definitely a nice switch from my usual salad. Great service and lots of options for the rest of the family.

Had the seafood enchiladas which were quite good. Corn based tortilla wrapped around local shrimp and fish. Waitress was knowledgeable about celiac and noted that kitchen staff knows to change gloves when preparing meals for gluten free diners. My plate was identified as an allergen free meal by an obvious red sticker. Good meal with no problems. I’d go back.

Kaya was awesome to help with the most delicious options (of the very well marked menu). The food was delicious and came out with an allergy alert sticker on the plate. They have a gluten free cookie desert option which was also really good! Definitely recommend.

The perfect spot for anyone who has food allergies. The staff was wonderful.
We’ve had 4 meals that were gluten free before tonight on the OBX and hands down this was the best one.
The gluten free seafood enchiladas are an absolute must. It covers the gluten allergy and hits the seafood craving.
Highly recommend!!!! Can’t wait to come back to OBX and Barefoot Bernies!!! KAYA is the best!!

For someone with celiac and a dairy allergy, I was safe eating here. The waiter was very knowledgeable and super willing to go back and double check ingredients with the chef. My plate came out with a brightly colored “allergy alert” sticker. I didn’t get sick, and was thankful for the kindness of the staff.

Amazing experience! GF items are clearly marked, also “GM” items - things that can be modified to gluten free. Also has a separate fryer and a delicious GF dessert! Waitress even had celiac! We will be here again!

Menu offered many many gluten free options along with meals that could be modified. When saying I was gluten free, waitress asked if it was an allergy or preference. Once they were aware of allergy, they brought my food out separately and my place had an “allergy alert” sticker. Plus the food was amazing! Highly recommended!

Delicious!! Lots of GF options marked on the menu as well as items that can be modified to be GF. We had the seafood enchiladas and a steak dish. Both were great with large portions. Waiter was friendly and very helpful with GF question. I told them I have an allergy and my dishes were marked with an allergy alert sticker. Would love to go back and try more meals! They did have a GF cookie desert on the menu but I was too stuffed to try it! Bonus, while we waited there was a nice back patio and corn hole!

The Philly Sub "On a GF roll" was amazing! The bun was so good and so soft that I double checked with our server to make sure it was in fact their GF roll. 10 out of 10! The fries are delicious as well and cook in a dedicated fryer.

I told the waiter I had an allergy and he said he would inform the kitchen and make sure my food was prepped separately. It also came labeled. Delicious seafood bake; I swapped my sides for jasmine rice and coleslaw cause I didn’t want to risk it with the daily potato. I also got the GF chocolate chip cookie dessert and it was amazing. Fantastic experience. Bonus that it’s a Steelers bar.

My family has been coming to OBX for years now, but this was our first time here and it was AMAZING! Informed the waitress about my celiac and ordered the Philly steak sub with the gluten free modification. Absolutely delicious, and my food came out first and separately from my family’s meals and had an “allergy alert” sticker on the plate. Will be back soon!

(2022) Back in town again and just as pleased with the options. Pizza did not disappoint, nor did the mahi mahi meal! Fries still in a separate fryer! Allergy Alert sticker on our plates was an added bonus to feeling safe our food was carefully prepared.
(2019) Pretty good, decent size gluten free (and gluten modifiable) labeled menu. The kids had gluten free pizza and steak and french fries - they were fans. I had a Mahi Mahi sandwich (Udis roll) and really liked it.

The food was ok...the gluten free roll was amazing(hence 4 stars), but the meat (steak & cheese) was super salty (3 stars). The fries were a bonus. My non-gf family said the fried shrimp was also very salty.
Food was great!! I had a gluten free pizza with gf chocolate chip skillet. Definitely recommend the place. The service was great too!

This was the best restaurant of the vacation! I ordered the seafood enchiladas. They came with rice and beans. This was a very filling meal and it was delicious! My mom (gf, df) asked the server about her options. The server brought out the allergen guide so my mom could see it. She decided on Cuban Style Steak. She said it was the best steak she’s ever had. I tried it, too. It was a very flavorful and delicious steak.
Our plates and tickets were marked for allergies.
My gluten eating friends concurred that this was the best meal of the vacation.

This restaurant experience was amazing overall! The restaurant was clean, quick, and very knowledgeable about their gluten free options. The service was good. My favorite part was the marked menus allowing you to know easily what was gluten free and what could be modified to make it gluten free. There were plenty of options, however I wish there were pasta and taco options. They even had a chocolate chip cookie skillet we were too full to try. I personally had the BBQ chicken pizza and it was excellent! The food even came out marked with an “Allergen Alert” sticker.

I do NOT recommend this place.
Had the Gluten Free seafood enchiladas. I spoke with 2 servers (one referred me to another) if my selection was safe for someone with celiac and explained a cannot have any wheat or flour and was concerned there may be flour in the cheese sauce. I was assured it was safe because it was labeled GF. Added that she would include an allergy note on my order.
Someone else delivered the food; server checked back after I’d eaten more than half of my food and asked me if I got my sticker. They put a sticker on your plate that says “allergy”. I said yes I got my sticker and she left.
Now I am home, half hour later, and the stomach cramps have just begun.
Kinda sucks because we only had a few days here and are headed home tomorrow.

The amount of GF options on the menu was great and they have a dedicated fryer. Service was horrible. We waited over an hour. 45 minutes into our long wait, the waitress finally showed up and asked what we ordered again. They didn’t refill our drinks even after we asked. Food was mediocre at best. My Cuban Style Steak was tough and the chimicurri had no flavor (it almost tasted like water). The French fries were cold and soggy. Will not be returning because of the bad experience but maybe it was an off day.

Had another great dinner here—grilled mahi mahi sandwich with gluten-free bun and French fries. GF fries are cooked in a separate fryer, and the restaurant takes great pains to avoid cross-contamination. Our server was very knowledgeable. My plate was delivered with an allergy alert sticker on it. We’re going back again tonight. I’ve eaten here six times and never gotten sick.

Came here based on the glowing reviews and mentions of extensive safety measures. The wait staff (spoke to 3) was wholly unaware of any such precautions and did not offer any additional information or reassurance that my meal could be prepared with any regard to my dietary needs. Maybe this is under new management or the owners have stopped offering these options?
I decided not to eat here.

The waitstaff was knowledgeable of gluten allergies and what on the menu was gluten free. The plates came out of the kitchen with an "allergy alert" sticker, which was cool. I got the Lean-a-licious Jerk Mahi Tacos and they were yummy. The mahi seemed to be a little overcooked, but was still good. My husband got the Jerk Mahi Mahi and Shrimp with butter rum coconut rice and a broccoli salad. He said the sides were 'just okay' and that his fish and shrimp were also a little overcooked. They do have a dedicated fryer. The menu shows which items are GF or that can be gluten modified (GM). I would still say it's a great option to try.

Very knowledgeable staff. The menu is very clearly marked as to what's GF and what's Gluten Modification (GM). No red flags at all. All questions understood & answered. They even brought my food out first to help reduce the chance of cross-contimination and there was a sticker on it that stated: Allergy Alert. They did a great job!

GF items were clearly marked, waitstaff seemed to be well versed in what was safe but also seemed dismissive of the importance which made me nervous. However they were super busy so waitress was running her tail off and probably just didn’t have time to act like it really mattered. However, my son and I both enjoyed our meals (I had the jerked mahi mahi and shrimp and he had the Aloha chicken) Both were good, not amazing but enjoyed them. We are both celiacs and he is very sensitive to cross contamination- neither of us got sick. Bernies feels like a good choice, but maybe go when they are less busy.
