We had a very unsafe experience at Barra. Upon arrival we were incredibly clear with every item that it needs to be gluten free for my friends birthday who has the allergy. When we were there we ordered all GF options for apps once again stating GF. The guac and chips came out and we ate them almost to completion. Then a server came over while we were eating them and took them away saying “I need to bring these back now”. When the servers returned with a new tray they said “sorry you were given the wrong item” and we had to ask if the previous item was GF which they said yes. They then said “is that ok? Sorry”. And walked away. I went to the servers and then to the manager and said that this is not ok and it is a severe allergy and the food needs to be comped as there is nothing we can do now. The manager checked if the kitchen had indeed messed up and then upon verification said yes. The rest of the meal was confirmed GF upon delivery and they gave us a slice of flan to split. Then the bill came and they had comped the guac, the flan we did not order, and a small app. The remaining bill was 250+. We of course paid and tipped over 20% as that is appropriate. I don’t want to ruin their restaurant nut I want to share this to the GF community. They did not seem to respect the allergy as a real issue and were very secretive when bringing and changing the item that had gluten. They were nice people and i just do not believe they were trained about severity of the allergy.
I ordered the Gringas Tacos..they were delicious! I would have ordered one more taco to be more full next time. I didn't ask because I was only interested in the tacos, but it looked like most of the options were gluten free. They didn't label them on the menu though. They do not serve flour tortillas, only corn.
I would definitely go back..also enjoyed the atmosphere.
One important note: I don't think this place is wheelchair accessible. There were stairs to get up to the main dining spaces. Wish more places were fully wheelchair accessible...
Great food but *not* a dedicated gluten free facility. They have shrimp fried in panko and the fryer *is* shared for both tostadas and buñuelas. I went before this was added to the menu, when the entire facility *was* gluten free, but it is NO LONGER a 100% gluten free restaurant. Great drinks, the salsas are amazing.
Absolutely delicious tacos and great drinks! The entire menu is not GF (I had heard it was in the past, but fryer is no longer safe), but there were plenty of options to choose from. Our server was only on his second night working there but went out of his way to triple check with other staff that everything we were ordering was safe for celiac as well as a nut/sesame allergy. They really went above and beyond to make sure we could enjoy the food. Will definitely be going back!
I was really excited about this place but disappointed to learn once we got there that about half of the menu isn’t celiac safe. One item on the menu (fried shrimp) has gluten and the restaurant only has one fryer, so all the tostadas, empanadas, and several other dishes are not celiac safe. I had two tacos that were very disappointing, because the blue corn tortillas basically disintegrated into a soggy mess in my hands. The drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive, and the food for our party of four came out one dish at a time over the course of an hour—no one got to eat at the same time as anyone else. Overall a really disappointing experience. I would not recommend it.
They don’t advertise the fact, but the whole menu is gluten free! Everything (like tortillas and chips) are made from corn, and not wheat. Super cute place and great for takeout! The people who work here are so nice also. Great gluten-free cocktails too! Don’t miss the red salsa, it’s amazing.
Amazing spot. Almost everything on the menu is gluten-free. Our server was extremely kind and patient, and everything I wanted could be prepared gluten-free. The only item I wasn’t sure about were the tortilla chips, so definitely ask about the fryer situation for those if you’re interested. The tamal de esquite is a must-have. Also make sure to try out a cocktail or two!
