Review of Bastian

As a celiac who has limited eating-out options, I was excited to see so many gluten-free options on their menu. However, the server was quite confused about why the items-marked gluten-free also indicated that they contain soy sauce. Since the server wasn’t able to answer my questions adequately, and I needed more reassurance that the food wouldn’t make me sick, I asked to speak with the chef. At most places I dine at, this request has been happily entertained. However, I was quite disappointed when the chef refused to come out as he was “too busy” and if I could place my order with the server he would take care of it. Would I trust a chef that refuses to come out to speak to someone who has special dietary requirements? Nope. So of course, I walked out and did so after informing the manager that they should either a) not include food items that cater to special medical diets, or b) train their servers with all the information they need to adequately respond to diners with special dietary needs that have medical connotations, or c) make sure the chef does take out the time to address diners with special dietary needs. Hopefully, they’ll improve on these aspects. I’m not going back soon to find out.
