Stunning pastries. I ate here a few weeks before receiving my celiac diagnosis and had no idea it was a gluten free establishment. When I learned I would have to give up my beloved weekend treat of pastries and baked goods once I switched to GF, Berlu was one of the places that popped into my head and I really felt sad about having to miss out on food like that in my future. I was beyond happy to learn that actually they are gluten free. Thank goodness! Sometimes GF pastries look & feel a little sad, boring, dry, etc etc. they can leave quite a bit to be desired especially when you are looking over at your friends’ wonderful-looking gluten-laden items. Berlu makes pastries that really feel special- you will NOT feel like you are missing out on anything, I promise. 🙏🏼 Oh, and get the iced coffee too
My husband and I dined at Berlu a few months ago and were blown away. The attention to detail and imagination of the chef is like nothing we’d ever experienced. I don’t want to give too much away! If you can, go in ready to be surprised and delighted. One last thing to convince you: impeccable, gracious service.
Berlu for dinner — An ambitious 12 -course tasting menu, absolutely delicious. Reminiscent of L’Atelier Robuchon anywhere and Eden Hill in Seattle, PNW version. Very refined and light, everything was perfect and gorgeous to look at. 100% gluten-free and dairy-free because the chef is. My favorite restaurant in Portland.

It took us a while to find because there are two restaurants at 605 SE Belmont St. Hat Yai is on Belmont. Berlu is on 6th Ave at the tail end of Hat Yai (in a courtyard area). We found it when we walked north on sixth Avenue and then, when we didn’t find it, turned around and walked south on 6th Ave back toward Belmont. And there it was!
The dinner tasting menu counterpart to the casual daytime Berlu Bakery. Everything is gluten (and dairy) free and just really incredible. It's definitely a special occasion sort of meal with a price point to match, but so worth it if you can afford the splurge. Like the bakery, the food is inspired by Vince's Vietnamese heritage, with lots of really unique and delicious interpretations of ingredients and dishes. I got the non alcoholic drink pairings with mine, and I was pleased that it wasn't just a bunch of sweet mocktails, but really interesting and balanced juices and teas (eg. a cozy shiitake pear hot tea that was unexpected and so good). My friend got the wine pairings and said they were really interesting and great too. I mentioned a few other minor dietary restrictions when I made the reservation, and they were really proactive about giving me safe dishes with great substitutions for the things I couldn't eat. Overall, a really amazing meal, a fantastic dessert course, great drink pairings whether or not you drink alcohol, and a safe experience all around. I left feeling so full and happy, and I'm so grateful we have an amazing testing menu option like this that is also celiac safe!
SO GOOD. The pastries are amazing, and nothing tastes “gluten free.” Vince and his team are dedicated to GF. They also do togo soups on Fridays and a chicken + waffles collaboration with Hat Yai (amazing gluten free chicken) on weekends. Please y’all: go here and support them. This place is amazing.
Berlu is dedicated gluten free and dairy free! It’s Vietnamese and French inspired. Due to COVID, it’s a limited menu and pick-up only. They do a variety of baked goods, chicken and pandan waffles, and noodle bowls. Best chicken and waffles I’ve ever had!! This place is amazing...seriously, you need to go.
