Update: as of latest visit (4/15) it appears they no longer have a dedicated frier. I think this may be due to the addition of chicken nuggets to their menu. Sadness. And they managed to make my Celiac hubby very sick with just the burger & bun. Very sad. The good news is we found Pure Burger just a few miles away. The burgers are much better, GF sauces, toppings etc are clearly marked on the menu and they will be careful if you ask. *************** Delicious everything. They have GF buns. They are knowledgable about cross contamination. It was my understanding that they *do* have a dedicated frier that only fries are fried in. This does vary from location to location. However, the employees are quite clear that this frier is in close proximity to the onion ring frier & it is theoretically possible for an onion ring or crumbs to fall into the French fry frier. I specifically asked if the two friers shared oil or recirculated oil & was told that they do not. I've eaten at this location twice (most recently 12/14) & was given this exact same answer re: the friers both times. And my super sensitive Celiac hubby has had no reactions from eating here. So we feel reasonably comfortable eating here on the rare occasion that we take the kids to Legoland.
Good knowledge (they ask if it is an allergy or preference) though there is no gluten-free dedicated fryer so fries are off the table if you have Celiac.
Great knowledge of celiac and gluten sensitivity. Also, grass fed beef!
The manager was awesome. He told us they have a dedicated fryer for fries. Had burgers and fries. The manager knew what he was talking about and took care of us! The first employee we encountered when we walked in said nothing except the special gf buns is gf. Ask for the manager when you go in. Food was excellent! Burgers were juicy. They use Udi’s buns for their gf buns. They fry their French Fries in peanut oil.
Staff seemed knowledgable about gluten and went through our order a couple times to confirm that they had it right. Food was quite good. We were not warned about any cross-contamination with the fries as I've seen others mention here but also didn't seem to cause a reaction.
Ate here for lunch today. So far so good. Burger was grilled perfectly. GF bun was toasted and tasty. Fingers crossed no cross contamination on the toasting. GF fries are not GF! Separate fryer as another review mentioned but common oil since it shares the same heating element.
Nothing dedicated to GF, so 3 stars. The GF bun was great and didn't fall apart like most. However it goes through the same toasting mechanism as everything else so it's cross contaminated. I don't know if the bun had dairy - forgot to ask and hoped for the best. The avocado was excellent. The fries definitely have just one fryer so they don't recommend it (and they weren't awesome so you aren't missing much). They do have salads I realized later. Liked the fact they had turkey and veggie burger options. Lavender lemonade was decent. Free refill. Not much seating but near the restrooms so you can wash. Burger was good. But from GF perspective, nothing dedicated.
i am celiac. People working here are friendly and knowledgeable. I was about to take a bite into the burger when I thought to ask "this bread is gluten free, right?" (the bread just seemed too 'spongy' for being gluten free) and the young man looked and said no. so he took the entire dish back, apologized and told me I would get large fries without charge. and so it happened. the burger bread and fries were delicious! and I felt fine afterwards.
They get the celiac thing here: separate surfaces, change gloves, distinguish between gluten intolerant and celiac on the order instructions...even a separate fryer for the French fries (unfortunately it is right next to the regular fryer so we passed.)
Everything about this place is awesome! Best gluten free bun I've ever tasted! And all the food was great. Super friendly staff that knows a lot about gluten. He asked right away if we had a sensitivity or severe allergy so he could let the staff know to use all fresh utensils and wear gloves. Lots of fresh and organic. If I'm in SD again, I would definitely come back!
Amazing burger and the toasting of the Udi's bun was delicious!!! I had the side salad (again amazing!). They do not have a dedicated fryer, so fries and such are not an option for me (sensitive to cross contamination). Also, paper menu said Alaskan Cod was available in a gluten free option, but staff informed me it was made with Panko. Super knowledge and friendly - worth the visit!
Delicious Gluten Free bun. Best I've ever had. I haven't had any problems or cross contaminations issues out of the 8 times I've eaten there. Just say you want the gluten free bun and it's an allergy. Fries are cooked in a separate fryer so you're good to go!
I have eaten here several times and have not gotten sick. The staff including the manager get me and understand my fears of cross contamination. I like the Junior Burger with no sauce and no cheese with a GF Bun that is delicious! I like the side salad with no onions or cheese. Only thing that would make it better is a designated fryer for some yummy fries. The restaurant all the way to the bathrooms are kept pretty and clean! Burger Lounge you are doing it right! Thank you! 💟
They have GF buns which is awesome! The burger was good, too, however the service was not great at all. I had to send my burger back twice for being wrong. I can't do dairy either, so the first time they put grilled onions on it (butter) and buttered the bun. They also didn't put on the pickles or bacon I ordered. Second time they at least left off the grilled onions and the ungrilled bun, but still didn't put bacon or pickles on it. By time I got my food, my husband had finished his.
I had dinner here while in town for a conference. I ordered a gluten free burger, and the woman who took my order asked if it was an allergy or just a preference. I told her I had celiac so she made a point of telling the kitchen staff to keep it separate from anything with gluten. The GF bun was unusually good, as was the rest of the burger, and the lavender mint lemonade was delicious. I had no trouble after eating here, and had such a good experience, I went again on my last day in town to make sure I would be okay on my flight home the next day. On that occasion, they were out of GF buns, so served my burger on lettuce with no up-charge. Equally positive experience. Highly recommended!
I have now had the GF lounge burger several times without getting sick. I have celiac and am very sensitive. But stay away from the fries. Dedicated fryer supposedly, but it's either too close to the other fryer that does breaded products, or they aren't careful enough.
It as so nice to have a burger with a bun.... and it was delicious. I was bummed that the fries were fried with the onion rings.... especially when I called ahead and was told the were cooked on their own. Thankfully the girl at the counter warned me not to get them if I had an allergy.
The burger was amazing, but they said their fryer for the fries is right next to another fryer that does stuff with gluten and things easily fall into the fryer with the fries so they said they didn't recommend them for people who have Celiac Disease. It was great for a tasty burger though.
We loved the burgers and fries here! The 3 members of the family who had gf buns said they were great. We were warned of the possibility of cross contamination with the fries even though they fry them separate from the onion rings. No one had a problem even our youngest daughter who has celiac the very worst. Such a fun find on our way to the Padres game!
Beautiful burgers, and even better, I didn't get sick. Went two times over the course of our trip and loved it both times. The fries are made in the same fryer as the onion rings so I couldn't eat those, but the burger with a gluten free bun was more than enough to fill me up. Great place for the whole family to eat and their sodas are amazing.
The manager was great! I was ordering the kale salad and he explained that while they fry sweet potatoes in a separate fryer when the open there is a period where the fries are in mixed oils and although it seems ok for sensitivity he recommended that those with celiacs leave it off. He was knowledgable and forthcoming. Definitely recommend!
I read these reviews before going, and I asked about the gluten free bun prep before ordering. They told me that they are prepared in a separate area, so I assumed their procedures had changed. I got serious cross contamination flu like symptoms within a few hours after. Definitely not celiac safe!
