Symptomatic Celiac

Overall Rating

Review

To be honest, I did not feel safe eating here as a coeliac.

Yes, there are allergens marked on every dish and there are dishes made without gluten. However, when you try and speak to the staff to ask more questions about the dish and if it's safe for somebody with coeliac, they will tell you to just look at the allergen card.

A lot of the meat dishes aren't gluten free, and the only veggie dish (with protein) I could find was a chickpea curry that was quite nice. I had the curry with rice, chips, and some fried broccoli.

A lot of the side dishes are "gf" like the veggies, chips, roast potatoes and some of the sauces. I brought my own soy sauce for the sushi.

I had high hopes for the sushi because it's sushi, but for some reason ALL of the sushi was marked as having wheat. I asked the woman behind the serving area if she could tell me why and she went to get a manager who explained it's because of the sauce they put on top of the sushi. There was one sushi without this mystery white sauce, which was the mini cucumber sushi. I asked if I could eat that and she said yes, but pointed out that the tongs to grab the sushi was also covered in this white sauce and told me use a fork. Really not very reassuring. But I had the carefully selected sushi with the gf soy sauce I brought from home.

Moving on to the desserts, things I could try were: four different ice cream flavours, soft serve ice cream, jelly, Eton mess (it really was a mess though) and two mini puddings one mango and one lemon flavour. I thought this was a decent selection until I passed by a whole display case of about 8 different gluten-containing cakes for everyone else. There is also a chocolate fountain that I did not go near because I don't trust it at all.

Overall I left feeling full, but I think I didn't get my money's worth (£20) because I only got to try a really small portion of all the food they have there. My stomach was hurting after my meal but I think that's because I ate six plates of food to be honest. However I would not be surprised at all if I get sick in the days to come because buffet dining is just a nightmare for allergens.

They should really have a seperate menu so we can order what everyone else is eating but have it prepared safely and not contaminated by being mauled by dirty tongs.

Other notes: it gets extremely busy after 6pm even on weekdays.
