After extensively researching gluten-free options in the Montreal area, we decided that Cremerie Lafontaine would be a must-try for our vacation. However, when we arrived at the tackily decorated store, and asked the woman at the counter what was gluten-free, she didn't seem to know what was gluten-free or how to make it (she explained that it was her first day), though she did barely know any English. After waiting for about 15 minutes, a man came out from the back to answer our questions and make the food. However, when we asked if the waffles were gluten-free, he said "They are, but the waffle maker is broken and no one's fixed it." He still seemed quite confused as to what exactly we wanted, and it took another 15 or 20 minutes for him to make the three crepes that we eventually ordered, even though the restaurant was completely empty. After the long wait, we expected the crepes to be good, but they were just okay. Though our understanding had been that Cremerie Lafontaine was a completely gluten free establishment, it was not - the gluten-free ice cream cones were just the mass-produced, cardboard-tasting ones you could find in any grocery store, nothing special, especially compared to the delicious-looking, wheat-filled ones on display. I don't recommend coming here if you want anything past some ice cream in a simple cone. Though I don't think any of us got "glutened," it certainly wasn't a good experience, and were we to go to Montreal again, we certainly would not return.
