Dedicated GF

We special ordered some vegan items and they were good, but we weren’t blown-away-impressed. They rely heavily on rice flour, which is frustrating because it makes food super starchy without much nutrition. Not to mention that rice is cheap, so I’m surprised at how expensive these items are.

They ALSO use oat flour in many of their items. It’s certified GF but many celiacs (like me) can’t handle oat flour, and I don’t think dedicated GF bakeries should be using oats.

We special ordered challah, which was unusually sweet (but I haven’t had gluten challah in about 12 years so maybe I’ve just forgotten how sweet it was), but overall not bad.

The salads are extremely overpriced for what you get, and there are no vegan breads for sandwiches, which was doubly disappointing.

I’d been emailing with this place for awhile before we placed our order for pickup when traveling through the area, and it was really hard to get a straight answer about what exact flours they use in their baked goods, along with other ingredients. For a place that caters to food allergies, I expect about 5000% more transparency than this, and I expect this info to be on their website. However, once I wrote to them to say I wasn’t feeling well after eating there, they were quick to respond with the flour blend ingredients and asked if I needed or wanted full ingredients lists. I am grateful, but I wish this information was more freely available.

I am sure that the oat flour is why I did not feel well after eating here. (I have celiac reactions to oats.)

I was sad to throw away the oat-containing items I bought. So far I’m keeping the oat-free breads in the freezer to try at a later date. I’m not sure if the oat contamination will be as bad as gluten contamination, but I spent so much money on this stuff that I hate to toss it without giving it another chance.

I probably wouldn’t go back, but if you’re not vegan and you can eat GF oats, you’ll probably love this place and should try it.

The cafe is cute, with kitschy art and a board of local news. The cloth chairs are stained and the tables weren’t cleaned, but since the crumbs are gluten free, I’ll give them a pass.
