Very kind, knowledgeable waitstaff but extremely few options for gluten free unless you want meat & salad. No dedicated fryer, no kid-friendly options. Their homemade root beer was gluten free & tasty.
They have certain items on their menu listed as ‘gluten friendly’. I was really excited about the dedicated fryer for fries when we arrived but apparently they share the basket with gluten items, so I didn’t risk it. The gluten free beer was tasty.
They have a gluten free menu. Our outstanding waiter Howard gave us all the details. They have a dedicated fryer for gluten free fries, although I wasn't blown away by the fries. They also have gluten free buns and a gf IPA-style beer which was better than most gf beers I've had.
This is a great place for everyone - gluten free people, friends, children, everybody. My husband (not gfree) favorite beer on the planet, plus great gluten and gluten free food. I went there twice on my trip - had the gluten free steak salad and the hamburger. Both were great. They say they can't guaruntee 100% that there is no cross contamination, but I had no problems. I suggest if you are worried, to stick with things like the steak salad that don't have any bakery type items in the dish. But seriously, I love this place.
Always a place for a beer and a gf elk burger! But things have changed on the beer side. Stopped by to have a beer and found they are no longer making gf beer. Making a cider instead. Left wanting the beer they have had for almost 10 years. Food is still good and always have the gf menu
Great GF bun burger selection
They do have a separate GF menu but they let you know there is no way to be 100% sure of no contamination since it is a working brewery. I stuck to a salad to be safe. They have ciders and one GF beer that was just okay. They serve it with a colored rubber band around the pint class so you feel more secure that it's the GF one, although I do get nervous drinking a draft beer. My brother (also Celiac) ordered a cider that tasted more like a beer and felt sick later. He thinks he may have been served the wrong drink but it's hard to say.
Service was a bit slow but GF buns/ burgers and GF hot wings were well worth the wait. Great atmosphere, family friendly. Only one GF beer offered- decent.
Delicious and many options. The homemade gf bun was almost like a biscuit, very tasty. We also had the gf brownie with ice cream, yum!
Deschutes Brewery in Bend seems very intent on being at least "Gluten-free Friendly" while not claiming to have a dedicated fully Gluten Free Kitchen. The current chef seems to have brought this restaurant a long way toward gluten-free knowledge! We spoke to him about it when we ate there and he said it was a personal interest of his due to his son's food allergies. The staff is very well-informed.
Incredibly friendly, knowledgable staff. Good gluten free selection, excellent gluten free beer and one of the best gluten free buns I've had yet.
good options and it tasted great1
While they have a gluten free menu, I question how safe it is. Fries are listed on GF menu, but cooked in same fryer as everything else, so not GF. After questioning the waitress I was able to order safely (I think!) but think they need some work to be GF. The Portland location is much better about it.
The waiter seemed very knowledgeable when i asked what the gluten free beer was made of he asked if i was celiac and brought me a gluten free menu. It was small but i was glad to have something safe. He recommended to avoid the fryer because of cross contamination and suggested a side salad with oil and vinegar. I got a burger with gluten free bun and salad. Not sure how safe it is for celiacs but there is a dedicated menu and the waiter was looking out for my best interest
GF beer with a close replication of there regular brews. GF menu short but adequate for my intolerance needs.
My husband, a doctor in Central Oregon specializing in celiac disease and food allergies recently did a gluten-free review on Deschutes Brewery after dining there. In a nutshell, even though this restaurant offers a "gluten friendly" menu, the food does not appear to be safe for those with a gluten intolerance or celiac disease. This may be a decent place for those who have gone gluten-free as part of the ever growing fad, however for those with a serious sensitivity or celiac disease Dr. Kremer does not recommend dining here.
Limited menu but decent GF beer
Has a "gluten free" menu, but I got VERY I'll from eating "gluten-free" here. Food isn't that great anyway....Bend has better places to eat.
Our chiropractor & his wife dined there with a very poor GF result.
The BEST gluten free beer I have ever had. It's a pale ale with hops you expect. My guess is that it could be passed of as a normal pale ale and none would know. I can't wait till they start bottling it. It will put the other brewers thinking!
Very little I could eat (they managed to give me a steak with kale chips on the side, that's it.) Also had the gluten free beer. I got VERY sick. Don't know if it was the food or the beer... they make the beer around a bunch of gluteny beers, so I'm sure it's not 100% safe. Will never eat here again!
Several gluten free options. Their gf bun was great. Super soft. They had GF Groundbreaker IPA #5 on draft as well as a cider made in their main brewery. Both were great. The waitress was great at helping with questions. Ate here two nights. Would go back again!!!!
Meh. I was hear 4 years ago and it's more or less the same. They offer gluten free bread for your sandwich/burger and that's fine. They didn't have any gluten free beer (just cider). The food was ok and service was ok. I'd recommend trying one of the many many other places with gf options that Portland has to offer.
I have been told by several servers there that there fryer is not a dedicated gluten free fryer but "gluten burns off at such a high heat so it's safe." That is not how it works and could make someone with celiac severely sick!! They may have other things that are safer but I have to give them 1 star for the misinformation they are passing on!
Had a huge GF menu and a delicious GF beer in on tap! They have a disclaimer about the kitchen being open-air so cross contamination is a possibility but that is true at any kitchen that's not 100% GF and the waiter took extra care (beer came with a special rubber band around it to identify). As a highly sensitive celiac I had no symptoms after eating here! And it was delicious!
Has separate GF menu. Very much enjoyed the chimichurri fries (appetizer) and the Mango Black Bean Chili. Chili came with a wonderful GF bread (substitute for the cornbread that came with the non-GF option). Just disappointed with portion sizes...seemed a bit small for the price...otherwise would have given a 5 star. VERY busy on a Saturday night. Although it was loud, it was a place that still allowed you to talk at the table.
Absolutely amazing! Great gluten free menu complete with tap gf beer AND the best house made gluten and dairy-free bread/buns ever! Sadly, they said they can NOT sell just the bread/buns, so whoever wrote the previous review saying you could was mistaken. I highly recommend the quinoa burger and fries :)
