They made notes about our allergies for the kitchen and the people delivering food reassured us that they knew about the allergies and were paying attention. Several items were available GF. They have a shared fryer. Excellent food. Very good service. Gf bun was delicious!

Delicious food! Got the double d smash burger (which was massive) with pub fries. They cook with either canola oil, extra virgin olive oil, or rice bran oil (which oil depends on the menu item).

We had burgers and gluten free beer. I wish the beer was available for purchase to take home. The only trouble with the burgers is getting your mouth open wide enough to get a bite with everything in it.

I wanted to provide an update to the reviews based on my experience. There is NOT a dedicated fryer for the fries as a previous review states. The waitress said that there is a “separate fryer” for the fries, but during busy times they will use it for everything/gluten items so it is NOT safe for Celiacs. Also, their GF bun has dairy so please be aware if you cannot have dairy either. I ended up getting just a plain hamburger patty with lettuce and tomato and a side salad. In a town like Bend where so many restaurants are able to offer more, this experience was a disappointment.

Wonderful experience! They had a Gf pale ale on the menu that they brewed from non-gluten ingredients and it was delish, not too hoppy. I had two and they came marked as Gf for clarity. Also, they told me the fries are now in a dedicated fryer and they would toast my burger bun I’m it’s own pan. Everything was great, such a good burger bun, and no reaction. They seemed knowledgeable and I would definitely go back!

Always a great burger. They have one of the best in house baked buns I have found. No dedicated fryer so stick with side salad. They GF pale ale is celiac safe and amazing!

When I ordered the gluten free bun to go with my elk burger, I honestly just expected the usual huge doughy commercial buns most restaurants provide. Boy was I wrong! They make their own gluten free buns in house, they’re relatively thin so you’re not filling up on dough, and they didn’t fall apart when you look at it. The flavor was also fantastic! I honestly don’t know how the cross-contamination situation is, so I can’t really comment on that.

That burger was awesome! Great bun and even a celiac safe IPA that they brew! The Pazole soup was sooo good. No dedicated fryer. Ambiance and service on point.

We ordered a veggie & humus platter (no naan), chicken Caesar salad with no croutons, gf burger & large garden salad. The food was fantastic & they were great with being safe for us. Great service & excellent food!

My waiter was very knowledgeable, snd offered that there was no dedicated fryer without me needing to ask. He was super helpful, snd was fine with me tweaking my order to accommodate my needs. I had a green salad w/salmon on top snd it was absolutely delicious. Not even a twinge of reaction, and a fantastic lunch & great atmosphere.

We have had a good experience here in the past, but several people working there told us how short staffed they are right now, and as a result they couldn’t be very careful preparing gluten free food. They do cook fries in their own fryer, but the baskets get mixed up causing cross contamination. Nothing fried is gluten free, including the chicken wings which are labeled gluten free on the menu. They do have gluten free buns but my son was not a fan. Overall it was a disappointing visit for us but hopefully they’ll be back in full operating mode soon.

There IS a dedicated fryer but it is right next to the regular fryer so they are very cautious when coaching people. I am very sensitive, never gotten sick. Yesterday I was feeling like bar food, had a GF beer, GF buffalo wings and fries... be warned, that's enough food for two!
Love the elk burger but reAlly have to emphasize my allergy each time I go in.
Yes
Very kind, knowledgeable waitstaff but extremely few options for gluten free unless you want meat & salad. No dedicated fryer, no kid-friendly options. Their homemade root beer was gluten free & tasty.
They have certain items on their menu listed as ‘gluten friendly’. I was really excited about the dedicated fryer for fries when we arrived but apparently they share the basket with gluten items, so I didn’t risk it. The gluten free beer was tasty.
They have a gluten free menu. Our outstanding waiter Howard gave us all the details. They have a dedicated fryer for gluten free fries, although I wasn't blown away by the fries. They also have gluten free buns and a gf IPA-style beer which was better than most gf beers I've had.
Yes
This is a great place for everyone - gluten free people, friends, children, everybody. My husband (not gfree) favorite beer on the planet, plus great gluten and gluten free food. I went there twice on my trip - had the gluten free steak salad and the hamburger. Both were great. They say they can't guaruntee 100% that there is no cross contamination, but I had no problems. I suggest if you are worried, to stick with things like the steak salad that don't have any bakery type items in the dish. But seriously, I love this place.
Always a place for a beer and a gf elk burger! But things have changed on the beer side. Stopped by to have a beer and found they are no longer making gf beer. Making a cider instead. Left wanting the beer they have had for almost 10 years. Food is still good and always have the gf menu

Great GF bun burger selection
Yes
They do have a separate GF menu but they let you know there is no way to be 100% sure of no contamination since it is a working brewery. I stuck to a salad to be safe. They have ciders and one GF beer that was just okay. They serve it with a colored rubber band around the pint class so you feel more secure that it's the GF one, although I do get nervous drinking a draft beer. My brother (also Celiac) ordered a cider that tasted more like a beer and felt sick later. He thinks he may have been served the wrong drink but it's hard to say.
Service was a bit slow but GF buns/ burgers and GF hot wings were well worth the wait. Great atmosphere, family friendly. Only one GF beer offered- decent.
Delicious and many options. The homemade gf bun was almost like a biscuit, very tasty. We also had the gf brownie with ice cream, yum!

Deschutes Brewery in Bend seems very intent on being at least "Gluten-free Friendly" while not claiming to have a dedicated fully Gluten Free Kitchen. The current chef seems to have brought this restaurant a long way toward gluten-free knowledge! We spoke to him about it when we ate there and he said it was a personal interest of his due to his son's food allergies. The staff is very well-informed.
Incredibly friendly, knowledgable staff. Good gluten free selection, excellent gluten free beer and one of the best gluten free buns I've had yet.
good options and it tasted great1
While they have a gluten free menu, I question how safe it is. Fries are listed on GF menu, but cooked in same fryer as everything else, so not GF. After questioning the waitress I was able to order safely (I think!) but think they need some work to be GF. The Portland location is much better about it.
GF beer with a close replication of there regular brews. GF menu short but adequate for my intolerance needs.
No
My husband, a doctor in Central Oregon specializing in celiac disease and food allergies recently did a gluten-free review on Deschutes Brewery after dining there. In a nutshell, even though this restaurant offers a "gluten friendly" menu, the food does not appear to be safe for those with a gluten intolerance or celiac disease. This may be a decent place for those who have gone gluten-free as part of the ever growing fad, however for those with a serious sensitivity or celiac disease Dr. Kremer does not recommend dining here.
No
Limited menu but decent GF beer
Has a "gluten free" menu, but I got VERY I'll from eating "gluten-free" here. Food isn't that great anyway....Bend has better places to eat.
Our chiropractor & his wife dined there with a very poor GF result.
The BEST gluten free beer I have ever had. It's a pale ale with hops you expect. My guess is that it could be passed of as a normal pale ale and none would know. I can't wait till they start bottling it. It will put the other brewers thinking!
