I was looking forward to going here last night with my wife. I saw so many options for gluten free and it all looked so good.
Take a breath, here we go.
I told the server I have celiac and need to eat gluten free without any cross contact and she said no problem.
All of the apps that are labeled gf on the menu had some sort of fried component, and a lot of the “ad ons” that said gluten free were fried as well so my wife and I thought “there has to be a separate fryer”. I asked the server and she had to go check (first red flag, they should know), and came back to say no they don’t, but they’re careful not to mix gluten with gluten free 🫠 (second red flag). There was a chicken lettuce wrap app that has crispy wontons so I asked if we could have it without them to make it gf, said yeah no problem. No where on the menu does it say that the chicken was fried, server didn’t mention it either. Comes out with the food and it’s fried chicken pieces 🤦🏻♂. Obviously didn’t eat it.
I ended up with the bourbon chicken (which was grilled chicken, thank god) and it tasted really good, but was also wondering if I would get sick from it (I didn’t, luckily). If you eliminate the items marked gluten free (which are mostly fried) you have 5/20 that are truly “safe”. Disappointed.
I did not feel safe at all. Please be careful if you’re celiac, this trendy restaurant doesn’t seem to know much about what gluten is and frankly, what is actually gluten free on their menu, because it’s definitely NOT.
Overall, our experience here was meh. I had wanted to try it as they appeared to have a lot of GF options on their menu. Apparently, they have separate fryers (which I’m hoping is correct as I ate their gf breaded cauliflower). I had the Szechuan Stirfry that had so much sauce, it was like soup. My husband had the non GF wagyu burger (that can be made with a GF bun) but wasn’t impressed. He was worried that he wouldn’t be able to eat 2 burgers - but they’re even smaller than a Big Mac. There was no vibe, the restaurant was practically empty - which was surprising on a Saturday night. The real scene is obviously west of Bathurst. The drinks were unique and good - so I imagine it must be a nice place in the summer, especially as they have a rooftop patio. But on a cold-ish February night, it didn’t impress.
The atmosphere here is super cool, and the restaurant is located in an area of Toronto that many tourists miss but should definitely explore. I had their Moscow mule (which they offer in a 94oz version but I opted for a single), club sandwich on a gluten free bun and their signature salad. Everything tasted good but I was expecting the sandwich to be hot and it was a cold sandwich instead.
