Gustavo's Mexican Restaurant and Bar

Listen to me. This place does NOT know what gluten free is. The waitresses act confused when you ask, even though the menu claims that everything is gf except the flour tortillas. I had a waitress straight tell me everything was gf except two things she pointed out. So I ordered the shrimp enchiladas thinking those are fine since a) I’ve never seen an enchilada not on corn and b) she straight said all of them were gluten free. Twice. She even specifically delineated that enchiladas were safe and burritos were not *because* the burritos are on flour tortillas.

She then proceeds to bring me out a flour tortilla enchilada meal and since it was covered in sauce I couldn’t tell until I put it in my mouth and started chewing it. Now I’m just sitting here hoping I spit enough of it out that the pain doesn’t come.

I asked like three times and they still got it 1,000% wrong. And when my husband confronted her that she specifically said it was gluten free, she acted like she had no idea what he was talking about and just went oh that one is always flour tortilla — even after all the questions and verifications that make dining out with this issue so annoying and embarrassing almost all of the time. She also made some comment about the sauces were questionable wheat-wise too and that was AFTER the food was on the table and we started eating it!!!

It’s so much worse when a place claims to understand gluten free and makes it appear safe only to hurt people with their foods. It’s like the candy house in the woods that sucks children in so they can be victims of a witch or something.

Even from what I did eat, the food at this place is just simply not tasty enough to be worth the pain for people who have true gluten allergies.

Had a great meal here. Everything is said to be gluten free except the flour tortillas. I’m not sure about the fryer, so I’d be wary of the fried stuff. Lots of other options. Pollo Loco (chicken with mushrooms and cream sauce) and the stacked hatch chile enchiladas were both delicious. Service was great. They messed up a couple orders but they did all the right things to make it right.
