I ordered the most delicious sounding gluten free truffle fries, only to be asked after 10 minutes if I was celiac because the oil would cross contaminate my meal. I’m not celiac, but get excruciating pain in my gut and aching joints from gluten cross contamination, so I’m feeling quite cross that the gluten free options cooked in oil are obviously only for people that they would regard as gluten free pretenders, (ie. pretentious,) and not for people who are genuinely affected by gluten, (which can include gluten intolerant people who don’t test positive for being celiac.) I’m vegetarian as well so that left x2 options and I didn’t fancy the salads so I didn’t eat. Nice wait staff and the gluten eaters with me enjoyed the food, and the place was beautiful so a bit disappointing really. One star for the gluten free menu but if it wasn’t for that the place would have been 5 stars :(

Food was delicious and a good selection of gluten free and dairy indicated. I advised the waitress I was gluten free to the extent I wouldn’t eat anything deep fried and she immediately asked if I was coeliac. I love it when staff are trained to know what this means.
Before booking I used the website to contact them to find out how gluten free their options were as so much of the menu was GF. I got a prompt phone call back from them and they advised care was taken cross contamination could not be guaranteed as bread was prepared in the kitchen and the fryer was not gluten free so no deep fried item could be coeliac safe. I was advised the pork belly was not listed as gluten free but coeliacs had eaten it as the gluten was an element in the Chinese vinegar in marinade. I know there is always a risk eating out of home but it’s these types of conversations that make me feel safer with establishments.
