I had a great experience here! I’m severely gluten intolerant, and dairy free. They were quick to accommodate. I had eggs and hashbrowns, and split a gluten free waffle with my bf (not gf). Their gluten free waffles pancakes, etc also come dairy free, which I loved. My bf was as delighted with the waffle as I was, and said it didn’t taste gf. I was awestruck by how delicious the waffle was, and the texture was sublime. I will be back!
CELIACS BEWARE! While this place has numerous GF items on their menu, from pancakes and waffles to chicken nuggets, THEY DO NOT HAVE A DEDICATED FRYER OR GRILL and everything “gluten free” on the menu is cooked in the same oil or on surfaces as everything not gluten-free. Makes me wonder why they even bother having GF items on the menu? As soon as they cook it, it’s no longer gluten-free! I ate here several times, and always got sick after, and now I know why. ☹ The only redeeming factor for me is they have really good gluten-free desserts, and the cheesecake is amazing! Really wish restaurants like this would have a dedicated GF fryer and a dedicated grill to reduce cross-contamination; I’d eat there all the time!
I have had wonderful experiences with several breakfast bowls on the menu. definitely my go to gf breakfast in minneapolis! Tried the gf monster cookie last week and it was absolutely incredible as well
I was staying downtown for a couple of days and I ate here twice! They get their GF bread from a local bakery and it is the best I have ever had. I even asked twice that it was GF. They serve all of their GF dishes on red plates so it is super transparent what you are getting. There were so many options! I had the Herbie Sandwhich one day and the cinnamon French toast the other. There were a ton of GF desserts as well! I truly wish that I lived closer because this would be one of my favorite restaurants! Server was knowledgeable. They have a cute little breakfast bar so if you are traveling alone, you don't have to feel guilty for taking up space at a table.
I had an amazing experience going here. Staff knew about cross contamination and what was safe enough for me to eat. During my short stay, I visited here twice and had no reaction. The only reason I am rating it 4/5 for safety is because it’s not a dedicated restaurant, but they take every precaution necessary.
Lots of gluten-free and gluten aware vegetarian and non-vegetarian gluten-free options. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert because they have gf desserts and treats as well. I love that. They serve gluten-free items on red plates. It helps people in the kitchen know it is gf food. I wish other restaurants did this. It is not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, however the times I have eaten there, I did not have any issues. People with celiac disease, like me, base reviews on a restaurant on whether or not we got sick after eating there. 😂 sad the truth. 😊
I went here with a a couple friends. Both of their orders were wrong. I asked if she was sure my gluten free pancakes were gluten free and she said they were because gluten free is always on a red plate. Either the pancakes were not gluten free, or the cross contamination was very very bad. I really should have checked reviews before going. Their food is not safe.
I used to love Hen House but I got sick after eating there a while ago, I thought it was a fluke and went back on 3/2/24. The griddle no longer has a gluten free part. My food was served on a normal plate (not the red ones like before) and it had walnuts which I am very allergic to. I sent back all my food and they comped my Husbands meal, which was nice, but I don’t think I’ll be back.
Generally great restaurant if you aren't someone who has to worry about sensitive allergies or celiac. They do try to be accommodating but they are always packed and have a lot of staff. I think this gets in the way of being able to be consistent with the accommodations. Was told one of the dishes would be gluten free if deep fried chips were omitted. They failed to omit the chips, and then definitely picked them off when I complained rather than remake my food, based on the timing. If you are celiac eating here I'd get an omelet -no gluten ingredients by default as long as certain sauce is omitted, but they wouldn't be able to try to fool you scraping the sauce off if they mess up. And I understand the omelet making area is the least gluten-y spot in the kitchen.
This is a case of a server who either isn’t knowledgeable or doesn’t care. The menu made claims of gluten free but none were marked. When I asked about the salads the server said they could be made gluten free. I ordered the Baja and asked if the dressings were gluten free. He had to ask the kitchen and said that they were. I asked about the meats (there’s a choice) and he said they were all good and that they were just grilled, yet when the meat arrived it was clearly soaked in a sauce. I suspected that the chips were fried and asked about the fryer and it isn’t separate. I didn’t fuss—I should have asked a lot of questions before ordering (I know better). All to say, don’t go here expecting that they will be proactive in taking care of you even if you say you have an allergy. On the up side, my non-GF friends thoroughly enjoyed their meal and said everything was great. The place also has a cute vibe.
Had an interesting experience… gluten free blueberry pancakes were pretty tasty, however, the orange juice was horrible. Tasted like a mix of egg yolk and spices. Food was quick and we did enjoy our omelettes. I wish they had their gluten free items labeled so I didn’t have to ask..
The waiter didn’t seem to understand the importance of no gluten. I am currently curled up in bed with a bad reaction because he was flippant about my allergy.
Just had an amazing breakfast this morning. I usually stick to the tried and trues - eggs, hashbrowns and bacon/ham - though they had a wide assortment of pancakes, waffles, toast, etc. Menu not highlighted as most foods can be modified. Server was VERY knowledgeable. I felt confident ordering and the food was delicious. I'm very sensitive with no sign of cross contamination. Will eat here again before I leave the area.
Most things can be made gluten free, including waffles, pancakes, burgers, etc.. Shared fryer and prep stations, but they do a bunch to try to prevent cross contamination. My GF plate was red, waitress delivering food stated it was GF immediately upon serving, and the waitress was super helpful with the menu. That being said, she did say it was shared fryer and there was no GF only station, although they do all they can to prep the area before making the food. I had pancakes and chicken sausage and eggs. Very tasty. Should be safe if you can handle shared fryer GF. Waitress was amazing and I was confident in my food.
Even though other reviews say how the waffles aren’t safe I thought I’d be safe with just an omelet and hash browns, waitress was helpful but informed me that everything is at risk of cross contamination even the eggs because there is NO dedicated space, food was good but I got a little sick, if you’re super sensitive to any cross contamination like me I would probably go elsewhere
I ate at Hen House Eatery with a friend, for the first time a couple of weeks ago and got glutened. By the end of the day, I had rashes, horrible stomache pains, bloating and other symptoms that still haven't gone away...nightmarish, for anyone who understands these symptoms.
I double-checked to make sure my pancakes were gluten-free. My suspicion and concern is that I was served non-gluten free pancakes intentionally or negligently and no one fessed up. Its saddening if that's the case.
I've been living gluten-free under my Gastroenterologist's orders for about 10 years, way before it was "popular" to be gluten-free. I take my health seriously, and we have to respect other people's dietary restrictions even if we can't relate to them. My review is strictly about my experience, but this is a nice restaurant in general...good food, nice ambience, family friendly.
there may be some cross contamination, however I am very sensitive to gluten and have never been ill after eating here. I've had the pleasure of breakfast and lunch, visiting a total of at least 5 times. the servers are fantastic, knowledgeable, concerned about food sensitivities and are very kind. the food is awesome!
Went for breakfast on a Saturday. Called ahead to make sure they had a gluten free menu and was told it was "in the menu". The host said the same thing upon arrival, but lo and behold, there was nothing marked gluten free in the menu. The server was pretty rude, no apology for the misunderstanding and told us all the gluten free items were "in his head". Not acceptable for my girlfriend, who has a lot of anxiety about trying new places. We will not return
