Amazing! Almost everything is gf or can be made gf. I had a gluten free vegan Reuben with tomato bisque soup. The gf rye bread was the best bread I've had in the 17 years since my Celiac diagnosis. I asked where they got it and the server said the chef bakes it in house. Seriously one of my best eating experiences since going GF.
I have been cross-contaminated twice and ended up so sick after making it very clear to the server and staff that I have a medical intolerance. I do not believe this place is safe for those with Celiacs even if they tell you they know what they are doing. Never returning.
chicken, club, with bacon on gf.. flatbread. 5 stars!!! I'm going to have the gf rubin on gf rye.... then pancakes, then their berger on gf buns.... then... way to go Hugo's.!!! I'm having their tacos too... and borrito. .... they have lots of HIGH QUALITY menue items
Just wow! What amazing options for someone with Celiac disease, or any food allergies (they really get it) or someone who just wants healthy quality food. Had the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a vegetable melody, but the most amazing part was their gluten free pumpkin pie. Also you should note that they do not use high fructose corn syrup in their entrees, which is definitely a credit to high quality. The service was amazing and spot on. Never left us wanting for refills on tea or anything and very knowledgeable on entree ingredients. Will definitely go back or recommend.
Sorry to the reviewer who said he got sick, but I go to Hugo's often (once or more a week) and have NEVER been glutened by them. It's also my go-to place when out-of-town GF people are visiting. Menu is so clearly marked and easy to understand, and the food itself is freshly prepared and really good. And I can't resist their GF Chocolate Mousse with a GF cookie on top! BTW - I'm not Vegan, but if you are they have some great Vegan options and Vegan desserts as well.
An AMAZING find. We tried it on a Tuesday night and were totally impressed. We had the chimichurri steak and the special carne asada and we were not disappointed. There were no fewer than thirty gluten free options and everything is clearly marked. Not only do they mark the GF options, they mark everything that can be remade as GF. A total gem.
Hugo's probably has numerous options for those that are only gluten free, but for those that are also vegan, the menu is rather scarce. I was surprised that a "healthy" and "gluten free friendly" restaurant did not have gluten free versions of simple things such as pasta and bread. The food is of decent quality and the atmosphere is artsy. The main thing I should mention is that another waiter told me a few times that certain things (eg the bread basket) were gluten free. Had I not checked and checked and checked again, I might be in the hospital right now. We told another member of the staff who corrected the other waiters mistake but she was blatantly unapologetic. I somehow hoped people in a place like this would grasp the importance of those with special restrictions and allergies.
All entrees are clearly marked, and I double checked with the waitress that the item I was ordering was indeed Gluten free. However, I got extremely sick only 15 minutes after finishing my meal.. felt horrible (stomach ache and fatigue), emergency bathroom breaks AND then a dermatitis herpetaformis outbreak. There is nothing worse than a false sense of comfort... I'm not sure what happened with my food, but I won't be going back to find out.
Delicious food & great service! I had the French toast breakfast and it was so delicious that I returned that evening to try dinner. Everything is delicious and I did not get sick. I have Celiac & a milk allergy. I returned for dinner every evening while vacationing in L.A. The sticky buns are out of this world!
Loved Hugo’s! Incredible GF menu. I had hush puppies! not traditional in flavor, but I’ve missed that texture. Delicious entrees. Great GF dessert options. I believe the entire menu had GF or vegan options. 6 out of 5!
The menu is well labeled for multiple dietary needs (GF, Vegan, veg). The food and cocktails were delicious! I’m DF and dessert is usually a no-go for me, but they actually had a few options! We had the sticky buns, which I would describe more as a churro rolled into bun shape and covered in a DF caramel sauce and pecans. There is a small parking lot next door and garage across the street which was also a big perk!
Wow this place is amazing for coeliacs and other allergies!! Kids had coeliac safe fries and burgers for dinner and coeliac safe and dairy free pancakes for breakfast. All staff knowledgeable about coeliac, dairy and other allergies. Can’t recommend this place high enough!!!
The French toast was amazing don’t get me wrong, but I go SO EXTREMELY sick from eating here!! Was it gluten or food poisoning I don’t know. I also ate the bacon so maybe some kind of cross contamination? Be careful!
5 stars just for the French toast. Menu clearly marks GF items and items that can be altered to be GF. I also had sausage biscuits... They were umm gluten free... Good coffee, pleasant staff. If I lived in this area this would be a regular spot for me
This place was awesome!! I was so concerned about getting glutened since I am very sensitive but the waiter was very knowledgeable and even gave me a list of the ingredients in everything!
Knowledgeable, caring, and friendly staff. My non GF friends were very happy with their food, as was my vegan friend. We shared starters and the restaurant were able to accommodate both the GF and vegan diets at the same time. Separate fryers are used.
Really nice allergy-friendly place!!! The menu is very clearly marked with what is already gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and contains nuts and what can be altered, while still having lots of “normal” options (great for the rest of your family that may not have any allergy specific needs). They have all-day breakfast as well, including pancakes and other normally wheat products that I feel are usually pretty hard to find. I had the spaghetti and meatballs with GF penne. All of their noodles were homemade! I did not think about the cheese on top of the pasta, (I am also dairy-free) but the waitress was very kind and patient, not only offering to have them redo the plate for me but also letting me very kindly know that their turkey meatballs also contained Parmesan cheese, and so offered to swap out with veggieballs for me. The food arrived very quickly, even with my new plate. Everything was delicious and service was great, would definitely come and again and would love to try more of the menu!
So many GF options! We have never been to a restaurant with this many gf options! There’s even 5-6 dessert options! Tasty! Had fried pickles for an appetizer, pasta carbonara and lemon tart for dessert. Yum!!
Hugo’s was a great place regarding their food and their gluten free options. At first, I wasn’t sure that they were knowledgeable because some things on the menu like rye bread were labeled as gluten free. It turns out that instead of rye bread, they had a gluten free substitute. Their menu is labeled clearly with things that are gluten free and can be made gluten free. Most of the items on the menu were already gluten free. They have a separate fryer, and many of the things they fry are breaded gluten free. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about gluten and celiac and made me feel very comfortable eating. I got the tikka masala chicken, and it was delicious. I even tried some of my family members’ food because it was already gluten free and the waiter told me it was safe to eat it. Loved this place and definitely coming back.
My daughter has Celiac disease & I researched dining options before visiting LA. We were so happy to see the restaurant had so many GF items on their menu. She ordered the Mac and cheese with fries. After 3 bites she started to feel sick. We didn't think to test the food initially due to the reviews & because they make such an effort to protect those with allergies. They put a card on the table to let wait staff know there's an allergy. We tested the Mac and cheese after she felt sick & the machine detected low gluten . We tested the fries & they were GF. I appreciate their effort but there is still work to do. Perhaps cross contamination is the issue.
This is an absolute MUST. I had the cinnamon bun French toast which was also dairy free and it was incredible. Almost Anything on the menu can be made gluten free and the staff is seriously educated about celiac disease.
