Great for hubby and me. Him: carnivore and no food allergies/sensitivities. Me: celiac and plant-based. Food was delicious!
This place is super celiac friendly as long as you know what you are ordering. Let them know your specific allergies. Be aware that they do not have a dedicated fryer so anything fried is not safe.
Amazing! Almost everything is gf or can be made gf. I had a gluten free vegan Reuben with tomato bisque soup. The gf rye bread was the best bread I've had in the 17 years since my Celiac diagnosis. I asked where they got it and the server said the chef bakes it in house. Seriously one of my best eating experiences since going GF.
I've never been hit by CC here. Usually get their burger with a great gluten free rye bread. French Toast is also crazy good.
I have been cross-contaminated twice and ended up so sick after making it very clear to the server and staff that I have a medical intolerance. I do not believe this place is safe for those with Celiacs even if they tell you they know what they are doing. Never returning.
It was so satisfying to have real breakfast food on my vacation! We ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and cinnamon bun, which was plenty for 2 people to share. My mom who isn't GF enjoyed the food, and we returned later in the week for more.
I have gotten sick 2 times here. I am Celiac and they obviously don't understand CROSS contamination. Update: Gluten free doesn't mean Celiac safe! They don't use a dedicated pan for pancakes.
Staff were great and we're very informed about coeliac disease. My friend loved his GF chocolate chip pancakes. I had an eggs benedict but they only had GF flat bread which was disappointing. My meal was okay, not amazing.
chicken, club, with bacon on gf.. flatbread. 5 stars!!! I'm going to have the gf rubin on gf rye.... then pancakes, then their berger on gf buns.... then... way to go Hugo's.!!! I'm having their tacos too... and borrito. .... they have lots of HIGH QUALITY menue items
Extensive gf menu!! So many choices that I need to go back! Most items either come gf or can be made gf including Mac n' cheese, turkey club, spring rolls, soup.... Great service too. A gem in my book!
I am not sure why one of the reviewers said that they do not have a gluten free menu. They did! Their menu has so many selections that my family had a hard time deciding what to order. Food was fantastic!
This place is incredible - almost everything can be made GF including the entire kids menu and they try hard at avoiding cross contamination - a good place to take a mixure of gf/gluten eating/veg/meat eating people.
I just called them this morning and they said they no longer serve GF food.
food was as good as the service both amazing! expensive but wow good. very celiac friendly!
Lots of gluten free items. Their blueberry pancakes are GF and amazing.
Lovely place. Price good and good food (for coeliacs too)
My favourite restaurant in Valley.
Truly amazing restaurant that's always super tasty and accommodating to all kinds of eaters. I simply love love love this place!!
Food is good, Service is okay. Gluten Free Options are pretty good. Also $$$$
Awesome, this is one of my fave places. Love love the veggie stir fry w/ kelp noodles
Just wow! What amazing options for someone with Celiac disease, or any food allergies (they really get it) or someone who just wants healthy quality food. Had the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a vegetable melody, but the most amazing part was their gluten free pumpkin pie. Also you should note that they do not use high fructose corn syrup in their entrees, which is definitely a credit to high quality. The service was amazing and spot on. Never left us wanting for refills on tea or anything and very knowledgeable on entree ingredients. Will definitely go back or recommend.
The staff here was super helpful. Everything GF I've had here has been good. The Menu is massive and there are so many options. Plus it's easy to find what is gluten free (or could be made GF) because its right there on the menu.
Amazing. Great vegan and vegetarian options too.
Huge fan and supporter of Hugo's one of the first and best GF friendly places around - for some reason i prefer the Santa Monica location but both are delicious and safe!!
Sorry to the reviewer who said he got sick, but I go to Hugo's often (once or more a week) and have NEVER been glutened by them. It's also my go-to place when out-of-town GF people are visiting. Menu is so clearly marked and easy to understand, and the food itself is freshly prepared and really good. And I can't resist their GF Chocolate Mousse with a GF cookie on top! BTW - I'm not Vegan, but if you are they have some great Vegan options and Vegan desserts as well.
Their sumptuous menu features a bountiful array of gluten-free dishes and the waitstaff is friendly, knowledgable and sensitive. Hugo's is our go-to spot for date nights, lazy Sunday brunches and celebrations.
An AMAZING find. We tried it on a Tuesday night and were totally impressed. We had the chimichurri steak and the special carne asada and we were not disappointed. There were no fewer than thirty gluten free options and everything is clearly marked. Not only do they mark the GF options, they mark everything that can be remade as GF. A total gem.
food is good. service sucks
Hugo's probably has numerous options for those that are only gluten free, but for those that are also vegan, the menu is rather scarce. I was surprised that a "healthy" and "gluten free friendly" restaurant did not have gluten free versions of simple things such as pasta and bread. The food is of decent quality and the atmosphere is artsy. The main thing I should mention is that another waiter told me a few times that certain things (eg the bread basket) were gluten free. Had I not checked and checked and checked again, I might be in the hospital right now. We told another member of the staff who corrected the other waiters mistake but she was blatantly unapologetic. I somehow hoped people in a place like this would grasp the importance of those with special restrictions and allergies.
All entrees are clearly marked, and I double checked with the waitress that the item I was ordering was indeed Gluten free. However, I got extremely sick only 15 minutes after finishing my meal.. felt horrible (stomach ache and fatigue), emergency bathroom breaks AND then a dermatitis herpetaformis outbreak. There is nothing worse than a false sense of comfort... I'm not sure what happened with my food, but I won't be going back to find out.
Hugo’s was a great place regarding their food and their gluten free options. At first, I wasn’t sure that they were knowledgeable because some things on the menu like rye bread were labeled as gluten free. It turns out that instead of rye bread, they had a gluten free substitute. Their menu is labeled clearly with things that are gluten free and can be made gluten free. Most of the items on the menu were already gluten free. They have a separate fryer, and many of the things they fry are breaded gluten free. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about gluten and celiac and made me feel very comfortable eating. I got the tikka masala chicken, and it was delicious. I even tried some of my family members’ food because it was already gluten free and the waiter told me it was safe to eat it. Loved this place and definitely coming back.
My daughter has Celiac disease & I researched dining options before visiting LA. We were so happy to see the restaurant had so many GF items on their menu. She ordered the Mac and cheese with fries. After 3 bites she started to feel sick. We didn't think to test the food initially due to the reviews & because they make such an effort to protect those with allergies. They put a card on the table to let wait staff know there's an allergy. We tested the Mac and cheese after she felt sick & the machine detected low gluten . We tested the fries & they were GF. I appreciate their effort but there is still work to do. Perhaps cross contamination is the issue.
We ate a few things: turkey burger with gluten free rye bread, fries, Mac and cheese (non vegan version), and the Dutch baby pancake special (OMG I hope they put this on the full time menu). It was all incredible. I would drive out of my way to eat here again. Zero cross contamination. Very educated staff. Recommend.
Good food!! The menu can be a little adventurous for my taste so i just suggest to choose carefully when you order. For example I ordered the 'Go Green' frittata and it was VERY green. My fault bc it came as described. The staff is friendly and very patient when asking questions. They have an allergy chart you can ask for. If you see something you like on the menu, you can just cross reference it. And you can choose from indoor or outdoor seating. Ate there 3 times and my Celiac girlfriend did not get sick. Great coffee!! Try it!
This place is great, not just the food, but also the service! Gluten-free (as well as vegan and vegetarian) menu items are clearly marked. The staff appeared to be knowledgeable, and I (a celiac) felt safe eating here. The portions were very large and the food delicious. I recommend the Mac and Cheese, Tiramisu, and Brownie Torte.
Great find! Thank you gluten free ap! You will be spoilt for choice for gf options here- pasta, hamburgers, breakfast- everything! Highly recommend the Vietnamese spring rolls to start and the ginger lemonade! Our waitress was great. Don't be put off by the exterior of the place- it's great!
This place is Heaven for people with Celiac Disease. I love how thoroughly they treated my disease and made sure the waiters and the cooking staff knew to make sure everything was gluten free. Definitely worth the price. I highly advise anyone to go here if you are in the area...the vegetable casserole was amazing and the sherry vinegarette on the arugula salad made me actually enjoy arugula!
Nearly everything on the menu is gluten free. I had the cinnamon swirl French toast which was delicious and my boyfriend who is not gluten free had the scramble and loved it. My stomach is very sensitive and usually hurts if anything is contaminated with even a bit of gluten but this breakfast was perfect. Very helpful and friendly staff too.
Do whatever it takes to get here. You don't want to miss it! I came here 3 times during my 4 days in LA. Their desserts are divine. I had a burger with crispy onions - wonderful. The pancakes were just so-so but everything else is delicious. Felt very comfortable eating here. They will take care of you!
I have celiac and am extremely sensitive to gluten. This restaurant was amazing - a breath of fresh air! The waitress was friendly and knew what she was talking about. It is so rare to find a place out to eat where I have peace if mind and am not worried about contamination.
Hands down, one of the most AMAZING restaurants I've ever been too. The food is to die for. A separate GF frier, classy ambiance, unending options. Thai spring roles are beyond tasty, baked mac and cheese is surreal, and please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and order dessert! We got the sticky buns, and I can't express how delicious they are. Truly a culinary masterpiece. Honesty worth the drive to LA just to go here for dinner!!!!!
If you go here and skip dessert you're an idiot. I've been GF for 6 years and my companion caught me tearing up when I had my first bite of the Sticky Buns. Crunchy doughy doughnut that literally made me cry. Aside from that? Every item we had was AMAZING. As most reviewers said, nearly all menu items are (or can be made) GF. Waiter asked about dietary restrictions upon meeting us, and the rest is history. Not enough room to say more, but it's all rave and I'll be back soon.
This is my favorite restaurant, hands down! There are so many options for gluten-free, vegan, etc., there is something for everyone. The menu is enormous and they are very knowledgeable about allergies and cross contamination. Highly recommend this place!
My favorite place to visit anytime I visit LA (which is frequently). It is my only must eat place when here. Great options for celiac/gluten free and also helpful with any other food allergies (I can't eat corn or soy either). I've never had cross contamination issues here and the food is ALWAYS fantastic.
The Gluten free flat bread is delicious!! I was pleasantly surprised. FYI, I was expecting it to be disgusting. Great service! I didn't give it 5 stars only because they don't have regular mayo. They have a peppered mayo that I believe is vegan. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I will be going back though:)
I eat here once a week at least (and at their other location in West Hollwood for 2+ years). Great food - loads of choice - 1/2 the menu is GF (or can be) & they have a dedicated fryer. Great staff - very knowledgable, celiac aware & never had an issue with cross contamination.
