I have been here so many times now because they take such good care of me. They prep gf sandwiches in a separate area and they are so so good. Just make sure you tell them that you have celiac/allergy (whatever you have) so that they take extra precautions.
They Actually ask you if it's for allergies when you order gf bread! Then they apologize for take a little longer to make the sandwich so they can clean the area, wash, and reglove. (Like we mind them taking extra care to keep me safe) They were So nice and accommodating to my large family (We tote our 5 kids just about everywhere). The bread they use comes from agf bakery in Oakland. It's very delicious, like regular artisan. Unfortunately, it's more of a take out place for us. Tables are too high and they only have stools. The high chair doesn't fit the tablescuz of the hight. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.
Gluten free breads. Vegan options. But none of their vegan meats are gluten friendly.
Ike's in Santa Clara has separate area for gluten sandwiches.
Awesome sandwiches. The GF bread tastes great. Vegetarian and Vegan friendly also.
They have a separate station where they prep gluten free sandwiches. But they put it through the same oven as other bread so crumbs are flying everywhere in the oven causing cross contamination. I've eaten here over 30 times and I'm a celiac and I've gotten sick half the time. But most recently I did not get sick and they offered to make the sandwich without toasting it, so I can take it home and toast myself. Since I'm a celiac I can't eat here really but I still do every now and then because they are so good. If you're not a celiac you gotta try this place. It's a 5/5 stars but since it's not fully safe for celiacs I gotta go 4.
They were courteous enough to ask if it was a preference or an allergy and put mine in a separate bag from my boyfriends to avoid cross contamination. I will be giving them my business again in the near future. Also the gluten free bread is delicious.
All bread, even GF, goes through a shared oven that blows air. I really appreciate the staff warning us but it means the GF bread is not really an option except maybe for people just looking to reduce, but not eliminate, gluten. There are lettuce wraps. Precautions against cross-contamination don't look to be that thorough. It's a nice place and the people were very friendly and helpful but it's basically a college campus sandwich shop and not set up for true GF.
Fantastic selection of gluten free sandwiches in a deli counter environment. This location doesn't have all of them listed on the menu board, but I get the #333 Stephen Jenkins (singer from Third Eye Blind) which has pesto and turkey and stuff on a Toasted Gluten Free French Bread! *be sure to tell them you have a gluten 'allergy' because they do a special preparation to avoid cc.My gluten-eating exchange student said her gluten containing sandwich was the best sandwich she has ever had in her 17 years of life!
Right off the bat they asked if I was was to sensitive to have the same cutting board for things. Luckily I'm not, but the fact that they asked implies that they're willing to comply for those more sensitive than myself. I'm not sure how well they do however. The best part is that they didn't even charge me extra for gluten free bread - and they had th3 good stuff, not just sliced Udi's like many places. I said not celiac friendly because of experiences others have had, not myself.
Had gluten free bread when I asked. Food was great.
best gluten free bread I've had in Arizona
This location's gluten free sandwiches are just as amazing as the Mea's location. I love the sandwiches and often and drive way out of my way to get one. I'm hoping a location in Phoenix opens up!
I've been here a handful of times. i have gotten sick more than not. I'm a very sensitive celiac and can't have cross contamination whatsoever. they make the bread in the same oven as gluten beads. they also will bag your food in the same bag as gluten sandwiches if you had other people on your order. won't go back here anymore.
Omg so good. So many sandwiches to choose from, and the gf bread is a SUB, not two little tiny pieces of your typical gluten free bread. Staff is so friendly and informed me that they do share a kitchen, so cross contamination is a possibility. Sandwiches can get a bit pricey but you get a lot of food.
Absolutely impressed! I am so excited to go back.... The GF bread was delicious and no adverse reactions! Service is also very friendly - top notch. It tasted like eating real bread for the first time in over a year! I am very grateful to have found this place.
OMG! The service was beyond fantastic and I can't believe how good the gluten free bread is! I felt like I was eating real bread for the first time in a year. Wow! I will definitely be going to Ike's as often as possible!
Ike's sandwiches are delicious and the staff is very knowledgeable about Celiac. They have a well-defined process for their gluten-free customers. I got the Bella and it was wonderful! Quite possibly one of the best sandwiches that I have ever had. I have Celiac and did not get sick. I would definitely recommend it! :)
I haven't had a good sandwich in years, and thanks to this place I can have them all the time! The gluten free bread was crispy on the outside, but nice and soft and chewy on the inside, and just a little sweet. The ingredients in the sandwich were very fresh, and all the staff were super friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good gluten free sandwich.
This San Mateo location does not have an allergen list printed out but if you go online to see which of their sandwiches are gluten free they will make it for you in a dedicated space with dedicated tools and clean gloves. The bread and ingredients are inventive and quite good. I have not had a reaction after visiting this location.
Place was amazing!!!! My girlfriend is vegetarian and obviously needs to have zero gluten. Plethora of vegetarian options! I myself love me some meat and they had every possible option you could imagine! Think of subway and quisnos had a baby that was made of the best ingredients you could imagine........BOOM that would be Ike's!
I for one have missed getting to have Subway, and this place ' s Tony Soprano with the sauce makes Subway seem like a poor excuse for a sandwich place! There is a small risk of cross contamination, but I didn't get sick , and I am pretty sensitive (pure celiac disease). If you go between 3 pm and 7 pm, you get free chips (gluten free), a drink (soda; no diet choices), and a sucker for dessert! Worth a visit!
GF & DF (Gluten/Dairy Free) Sandwiches! Ike's Place in Tempe offers GF/Vegeterian/Vegan options on REAL Gluten Free Hoagie Rolls (locally sourced GF bakery)! My current fave is the "Tony Soprano" (Ham, Italian Dressing, Salami, Turkey, Lettuce/Tomato/Banana Peppers/Onions, and their super-awesome "Dirty Sauce"). Be sure to order IN PERSON & stress that you have GLUTEN ALLERGY; insist that they change their gloves/prepare separately. So far, I've had their sandwiches & no reaction (knock on wood!). Thanks so much to Ike's for being the friendliest & best GF/DF hoagie shop in Mesa AZ!
GF & DF (Gluten/Dairy Free) Sandwiches! Ike's Place in Tempe offers GF/Vegeterian/Vegan options on REAL Gluten Free Hoagie Rolls (locally sourced GF bakery)! My current fave is the "Lizzy's Lips" (Halal Chicken, Italian Dressing, Lettuce/Tomato/Banana Peppers/Onions, and their super-awesome "Dirty Sauce"). Be sure to order IN PERSON & stress that you have GLUTEN ALLERGY; insists that they change their gloves/prepare separately. So far, I've had their sandwiches 3x's & no reaction (knock on wood!). Thanks so much to Ike's for being the friendliest & best GF/DF hoagie shop in Tempe!
First time I went to Ike's in Oakland was all-around amazing -- great ingredients, fresh and with fantastic taste, and the folks at the storefront (2204 Broadway Street Oakland CA 510-338-6789) took great care: I ate, I enjoyed the taste and texture, and I had zero reactions. <3 This time I went to the location in Walnut Creek, and although I gave them clear instructions and stressed I would get very sick, someone back in the kitchen did not know or did not care -- I developed a reaction immediately after eating, and have the usual tingly hands/feet, dull neck pain, headache rising, gastrointestinal problems, with only God knowing how I will feel tomorrow. It is fine if you are not safe because you are too busy or too crowded! But I would prefer eateries not to lie to me about food safety and make the next 24 hours hell for me as a customer that trusted them.
The first time I went there was great--amazing sandwich, and the "dirty sauce", a garlic aioli I believe, was a delicious addition. When you order a sandwich on a GF bun, they ask if your GF-ness is a preference or an allergy, which I appreciated. The second time, however, I got the same sandwich and a day later, I felt those tell-tale cramps and pains.. I'm betting what happened was they didn't wipe down the counters enough while making the sandwich, resulting in some gluten crumbs on my GF bun. Almost two weeks later, I'm fully recovered and exercising more caution and skepticism. Overall, I'd say Ike's is good for people who mainly stick to a GF diet as a preference, and a big risk for folks with celiac.. :(
Best gluten free baguette I've ever had. I actually took it back because I thought they made a mistake! Sandwich was tasty but a little pricey ($10). Only con: all chips have MSG and other bad ingredients. I would suggest a different brand of chips for this chain. Also-they ask allergy or preference, which I like.
My low rating is based only on safety. Sandwiches are incredibly good; I really recommend this place if you're not as sensitive as I. But a few weeks ago, a poorly trained and enthusiastic cashier assured me I'd be safe and I wasn't. The chain owner took the time to reply personally to my complaint; he seems to take health very seriously and says his staff are rigorously trained to be as safe as possible but to not promise that cross-contam is unlikely. I wish they could train staff to prep even more safely. I'd eat here all the time if I could. Again, I highly recommend for those who don't have to worry about trace gluten.
They do offer gluten-free bread and lots of vegan options. I wasn't sold on the bread despite hearing so many rave reviews about it... maybe it's because I've recently switched from eating gluten in the past few months and it doesn't compare to the dutch crunch.
I have a wheat allergy, not celiac, so I can't vouch for the kitchen safety. Contamination risk seems high if you are very sensitive because it's a tight space. Their GF bread is delicious--so soft with a great texture. The staff usually ask if you have an allergy if you order GF, but not always, so be sure to point it out. Also, the staff has told me on two occasions that their vegan meats are wheat-free, but they aren't marked GF on the website so I'm not sure I trust the answer.
Gluten-free bread is offered here, but cross-contamination is very high. It is definitely not for celiacs but may be an option for others. The gf bread is very good, though much smaller than the regular sandwiches. I love the Shrek and the Luther Burbank. A manager said they're looking to offer gf English muffins as well and have been doing taste tests to find the brand they like best.
Best sandwich shop you'll ever find! They are very sensitive to gluten free people, although people with severe allergies maybe shouldnt I there just to be safe, and they get their own special gluten free bread from mariposa bakery (I believe), and everything they offer is amazing! I've never come across a better sandwich place ever, and most of my friends agree. Try it, you'll be amazed!
