Ugh! I ordered a GF sub online and used the “Special Instructions” box to tell them I had celiac and to please take extra care to avoid cross contamination . I even left a large tip and profusely thanked them. I usually go in to order, but on many occasions other locations said they take super good care and just letting them know in the instruction box is enough.

So I came in to the restaurant just as the guy was spreading mayonnaise on my sub. He was dipping the knife into the mayo on the common line. I apologized and told him now the sandwich was contaminated. I asked him to top it with stuff from the back. So him and another person (seemed like a boss) remade the sandwich using mayo from a squeeze bottle. Then the first guy reaches into the common line lettuce and plops it onto my sandwich, the supervisor-y guy elbowed him and he removed the lettuce and got new lettuce … and then topped my sub with tomato from the common line. I couldn’t believe it! I don’t like confrontation and the shop was getting busy. So I figured I’d give the sub to my husband and find something in the freezer for dinner instead.

The whole ride home I convinced myself that I was being paranoid. He took most of the lettuce off, and besides, how contaminated could it really be? And the tomatoes he grabbed were on the very top of the metal container. So I trusted it … and have spent the last two days in glutenous, painful misery.

Rule #1 - Don’t second guess the amount of contamination from a sub shop!

Rule #2 - never ever ever order a sub from anywhere without watching like a hawk and always speak up.

I don’t want to eat any sub from anywhere for a long time, but in the future when I do, I’ll skip this location for sure!
