If you are celiac, then you will relate to the feeling I got when the server said “gluten allergy or just...gluten free?”. I had just finished explaining I have a “SERIOUS gluten allergy”. (Yes, I say allergy sometimes now because most people have no idea what celiac is, but they understand ‘allergy’, usually.) I spent about 20% of my time there trying to explain to the server what gluten was. I ended up eating only sashimi and nigiri because according to her, that was all I would be able to eat. The menu was very vague, so it was unclear as to what I could eat besides raw fish and rice. My server clearly had no idea what gluten was. Midway through our meal, before she served our second round of orders, she came to ask what would happen to me if I did get some in my food. So if I swell up and die here that’s worth being extra careful, but if I end up getting sick and writhing in pain for days, that’s not a good reason? I am probably being too harsh, but it was a bad experience and I would not recommend this place to those who are extra sensitive. I don’t trust the communication got through to the chefs, and that could be risky.
