Have been twice since diagnosis. Both times they did very well with accommodating me. Told them I had celiac/gluten allergy and they promptly called it back to the kitchen, then proceeded to change gloves, and changed scoops for the sides (presumably since the handles might have been contaminated). The gluten free food is passed over the counter, vs standard which is passed under the counter. Workers were able to tell me what was gluten free and what was not. Most food here is gluten free, minus the corn bread and mashed potatoes.
The first time, the food was handed to me be directly when ordering, the second time they brought it out to our table since it was gluten free and took a little extra time.
With some trepidation, we went to Joe’s based on positive gf reviews. My fear in places such as this is cross contamination. I ordered the half slab of ribs and potato salad. The cashier assured me the delicious looking cornbread was not gf. The food was good (good but not great) and I did not get sick. It’s a rowdy, loud fun picnic table style place with a great outdoor seating area. I would definitely go back when we go to the Hale Theater again
Went there to have a lunch with my team at work... I informed them of my celiac disease, and they understood and immediately were able to provide options for me to order. I ordered meat and baked beans, and unfortunately, I got extremely sick within 30 minutes. This place may be fine for less sensitive people, but I got cross contaminated pretty bad.
This was a complete disaster. Did take-out due to COVID diagnosis. Ordered brisket sandwich with GF bun for my daughter, side salad with no croutons. Got a box with a pile of meat, with no bun and a note they’re out and a salad with croutons. I called and spoke with management, and basically learned they don’t call or offer subs when out of GF bread. They didn’t tell the person picking up my order, so she ended up with a pile of meat and had to provide her own bread. At least they refunded the cost after I called.
Excellent service, cafeteria style. My meal on a gf bun was made in the back with fresh ingredients instead of on the line. Most sides are GF (we had pit beans, potato salad, corn and green salad). Awesome outdoor seating area with a Twister game, if you can still move when you’re done eating! Check out the website and scroll down for interactive allergen listing for GF items. Not marked on menu in restaurant but I came prepared and double checked with staff.
We had a great experience at Joes. Definitely recommend looking up the allergy friendly menu options online prior to going so you’re prepared. From what I remember all meats and sauces were GF . Sides vary. Disappointed they had run out of GF buns when we got there but my boyfriend got the pulled pork and potato salad and had no reaction. Absolutely recommend.
Joes does an incredible job making sure their food is as uncontaminated as possible. They pull their meat out from the back of the kitchen directly from their cookers rather than where they get meat for everyone else. They really know how to do gluten free for an allergy. Their gluten free bun is also one of the best I’ve been had. I’m surprised to read that someone doesn’t think so. It’s soft and not dry. I think it’s quite delicious. And the other review that gave them 3 stars because they don’t show gluten free options on their menu - is just sad. They have been there since 1929 and are an old family restaurant. They prepare all of their staff to accommodate gluten allergies and there are a lot of options for people with allergies. That counts for almost everything in my book.
Menu does not indicate any gluten free options but I called the restaurant & manager told me they have gluten free buns/bread and no gluten in their sauces. When you order food, need to let them know you want gluten free food. They ask if you have a gluten allergy or preference for gluten free. No gluten free desserts.
