Nearly everything on the menu is gluten-free (and clearly marked as such) and it's pretty easy to avoid dairy. The chicken and beef empanadas are delicious. The Arepa Andina (sort of a corn biscuit, with a choice of meat) is quite tasty, as is the Arroz con Pollo. The Sobrebarigga Criolla (steak recipe served with rice and yuca) is wonderful, but does contain gluten from being made with beer. The staff is very helpful regarding allergies. Perhaps check out the menu online before you go - a few things in the descriptions may require a translation if you're new to Columbian cuisine. My ONLY complaint is that they add an automatic 18% tip onto the bill (no matter the size of the party). So far, La Chiva's service has warranted a decent tip, but I'd still prefer to make that call myself! Also, the menu is "high-tech" and only available online - no kidding - you use your phone to read the menu at your table, but that was easy enough.
A charming Colombian restaurant in a very cute building with a very traditional and delicious menu.
Almost all, if not all, of the food here is GF. It’s clearly marked on the menu, though inconsistently (some sections, like sides, aren’t marked, though those items are definitely GF and are served in meals marked GF). There are some items that seem like they must be GF (tamals, salad) but aren’t marked on the menu. Different online menus are also marked differently. The fryer is apparently not dedicated but they make some fried type items in an air fryer.
I had a Bandeja Montanera, a large meat platter with rice and beans and it was great. Another person with me had the veggie version of that and another had the Sancocho, which was truly a huge bowl of soup. We also had the arepas con queso. Service was great and everything went quite well - they seem to understand GF and the meal was quite successful for me, celiac-wise.
I got takeout here because of the first review. The online menu unfortunately didn't say what was GF, so I had to call them and it was hard to hear, so it might be best to go in person. Once I got it, it was so amazing! Seriously delicious. I didn't get sick and they even had an option for my low fodmap partner (a mozzarella filled arepa). Also try the lime drink they do.
Great outdoor patio. Delicious food that is very reasonably priced. Large portions. I’ve had the bistec, bandeja montanera, morcilla, lena frita, and arepas. The arepas are just ok. Everything else I would totally get again. Nothing fried has flour. Tons of gluten free options- more than just what is explicitly marked on the menu.
What a fun Colombian restaurant. The staff was so friendly and all the Gluten Free items are marked and some not. We had the Empanadas, Lena Frita and for main course ordered Pabellon La Chiva and Bistec encebollado. Everything was fresh and fantastic! It was so nice to have a new style of food to try. Overall we had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back.
