I went in to meet a friend for lunch after arriving back in L.A. via Union Station. On arrival I used this app to see if there were any safe options, being that Mexican food can often be made gluten free, but nothing came up for the Olvera Street restaurants. I decided to just go over and ask to see if they could accommodate a gluten free diet. When I did, it took a minute but a very nice man came over and told me they had a vegetarian dish that had avocado and cactus in it because he knew those ingredients didn't have gluten in them. I often find when I tell people I can't have gluten, they offer me vegetarian food so this wasn't surprising. Wanting more clarification I mentioned flour tortillas and asked if they cook them on the same comal as their corn and he said, "We don't have flour tortillas, only corn." YES! Then he informed me that the only thing on their menu with flour was the chile rellenos and they didn't have them that day. Even safer! I ordered a combination plate of 2 carnitas tacos with rice and beans. Everything was delicious! They make their corn tortillas from scratch and they were fluffy and soft and the carnitas were juicy and well seasoned. I can't wait to eat here again.
