The restaurant was great and they were super knowledgeable! As soon as I mentioned celiac disease, they were like, ok great so it’s a serious allergy and no cross contamination. Even though the menu wasn’t labeled, they hand labeled everything and walked through any adjustments they could make. So great!

I had an incredible meal here, didn’t get sick, and appreciated the care the staff took to check with the kitchen and accommodate me. It’s always such a pleasant surprise to be treated with dignity and eat a fancy meal that doesn’t disappoint. Their star dish is a crispy suckling pig that’s gf, yum!
I used to eat here often before my diagnosis, but this was my first time returning as a celiac. I called in advance and they said they could accommodate me. They understood celiac required avoiding cc, which felt like a good sign. The waiter patiently went through the menu with us to explain what was gf, could be adjusted, and checked on the fryer oil with the kitchen to ensure no cc for some of the fried items (nothing on the menu is marked). There are a few bread and pasta items on the menu but since they’re limited and the staff seemed knowledgeable, I felt comfortable. I highly recommend La Vara for a splurge spot, if you can swing it. They also have a sister fish restaurant Saint Julivert down the block.
