Review of Malaya Tea Room

Review

I am updating this review in light of recent events: I put this same review on google maps and MTR responded very rudely, telling me they never claimed to be able to do gluten free tea and that I had INSISTED they do it despite being told no. This was never the case. All the times I went, I asked over the phone beforehand if they were still able to accommodate celiac and each time they were enthusiastic about doing it. In light of this sudden change in attitude where they are now publicly saying they would never offer gf tea and I am a liar or whatever (lol), I’m going to caution anybody reading this review that this new attitude probably doesn’t bode well— but if you want to try it, just be prepared to be potentially met by that bananas attitude. And now the old review:

Malaya Tea Room is a great high tea experience. It’s relatively inexpensive as well. They have flavors for both picky and adventurous eaters, and their desserts change seasonally. What I like about them is that most of the desserts are always gluten free; mango sago, ondeh ondeh, fruits, macarons, and chocolates. My parents got some of the items (not the macaron), in addition to a small slice of cake (they are not gf). They have gluten free bread for the sandwiches, plus gf crackers. They have a summer item of Air Batu Campur which is shaved ice with toppings: red bean, sweet corn, pandan jelly, grass jelly, rose syrup, coconut palm sugar, and evaporated milk. It’s gf and refreshing! Overall the staff seems aware and knowledgeable about what gf is. The only disappointing element is that they do not have gf scones— but the price of the meal includes the scone whether or not you eat it. I requested it be put on my parents’ dish, and they ate mine. Otherwise, really good! Did not get glutened.

If you want a gluten free tea, you MUST call and tell them beforehand when you make the reservation so that they can buy gf bread, as they don’t keep it stocked.
