Fantastic spot for GF pastries and bread! I was highly impressed with the quality of their bread and baguettes. Both crisp and soft without being soggy or falling apart. Great spot for anyone looking for a delicious GF deli-style meal! Pizzas, sandwiches, melts, and more in addition to cakes, cupcakes, and other pastries.
Cinnamon rolls are bready. A lot of options I cannot have and there is a modest risk for cross contamination. Their pizza has way too much cheese. I enjoy how they use a local roaster for their coffee. The coconut lemon bar and bagels are excellent.
Really clean bathroom. Gets too much foot traffic so not the best option for hanging out at, I get concerned about getting sick. Regardless, I am grateful this place exists as an option and I appreciate that they have a large kitchen (you could see into it if you head to the bathroom) so it makes me confident that cross contamination is minimal.
We are so grateful for this place. We love everything we’ve tried from Mariposa! We love the variety of desserts and the pizza!
I need to get over here more often. Or maybe they can open on the peninsula???
Amazing food. Incredible croissants. Spanakopita. Loads of breakfast and lunch options. All around amazing.
Exquisite!!!!! I’ve ordered online from them before and had it shipped to SoCal and now I’m finally trying the real deal. Got all of my favorite pastries I haven’t had in years and it was the most delicious experience. My favs were the pretzel and the cinnamon graham cracker, the most nostalgic. Tastes even better in person, they are doing a fantastic job. Outstanding!
Unfortunately has gone downhill a bit lately. They have several drinks in their refrigerator that are NOT celiac safe. There is a canned coffee drink that has oat milk that are not from GF oats. They also have a Boba canned drink that is impossible to figure out if it’s gluten free (no labeling). This makes me really not trust what they are doing otherwise at their store. And sadly, I have been there so many times! Used to love this place.
WHAT I GOT & HOW WAS IT?
I got two hand pies: apple berry and cherry. I also got a cinnamon roll, a soft pretzel, a brown sugar cinnamon poptart dupe, challah, and pain au chocolate.
The bread they use here is not like pastry bread despite it being used for that purpose. It is heavy, bready, kind of crumbly, and easily identifiable as gluten free. When I'm getting gluten free Pastries at $6+ a pop, I'm spending a premium to purchase something I couldn't make myself. A fluffy croissant. A decadent hand pie. This was not that; not worth the money. Perhaps if it had been a few dollars cheaper? Let's talk individual items:
Challah: The challah was similar to real challah, but woefully underbaked and as a result, sort of dense and chewy at the bottom. Their problem is twofold: the tapioca starch or potato starch in their flour blend is too much, and also they clearly overmixed then underbaked it. $10 for a small loaf and it was so sad. Edible, yes, but not that enjoyable.
Cinnamon roll: The cinnamon roll was the best item, 8/10. It was certainly flavorful. Good amount of cinnamon and frosting, but again the bread is just not the type to use in a pastry.
Handpies: The handpies are just fine. They are not structurally sound. Handpies are also supposed to be made out of pie dough, but Mariposa opted to make it out of the same dense bready dough that everything else is made of. The cherry hand pie was weirdly chewy. They had enough filling though, which was good.
Pop tart: The pop tart had no filling, just a whisper of what was once brown sugar now melted into that same bready dough.
Pretzel: The soft pretzel was nicely salted but again the dough was an issue. I felt the texture was most like the gluten version-- not as light but definitely close to a real soft pretzel.
Chocolate croissant aka pain au chocolate: The pain au chocolate was generously filled just like the real ones but the bread was not even close to croissant bread. That was so sad because when I looked at its inside it certainly had the APPEARANCE of a croissant. Like the appearance was flaky with the fluffy look, but the texture was not flaky-- instead very dense.
Pastries were helped by warming in the oven/ microwave on a low setting, but not much.
DO THEY KEEP?
Another big issue I had with Mariposa is that their baked goods don't keep well. I stored them in a cool dry place in airtight containers overnight and less than 24 hr later they were already stale.
WORTH IT?
It wasn't worth the money; in this area you can get better GF pastries from Life is Sweet. These items didn't taste BAD, they tasted just fine and the fruit pies had ample filling. It's fun to try and see. But they weren't good enough to justify spending that much again. I could've made every one of these pastries at home and made them taste more like the real thing, rather than this heavy mess of dough, and I'm not even that good of a baker. Schar sells better croissants at Safeway for $10. And wholly gluten free makes better pie crust for like $3.50. I mean they even sell that SAME crust for a markup there. I don't think I'd be so bummed by this experience if things had just been a bit cheaper. It was at least $6.50 for even the smallest items.
LAYOUT
The shop is very small and not laid out smartly at all. It would be cozy if there was just one customer I think, but Mariposa is evidently popular so there were about 8 people inside when we were. It's extremely difficult to get around and look at things when there's more than two people in there.
This is my go-to GF sandwich spot (everything here is GF). I love the SF steak sandwich and BLAT sandwich. They also have an amazing veggie curry empanada! They have a lot of baked goods including cupcakes, cookies, scones, and more. The staff are also so lovely!
Dedicated gluten free bakery! Staff are very friendly and helpful! Great cinnamon rolls! Also great holiday themed breads, pies, and pastries, etc:)
Love this place and order periodically and take some home to freeze. They also do mail order. It’s nice to have a variety of baked goods from which to choose instead of the one or two choices I eat out. My husband and I split one of the turkey sandwiches that was on a baguette and it was delicious. I love the chocolate croissants and when they offer their lemon ricotta cake. They have pasties, cookies, cakes , breads, pies and pasta . All in a dedicated gluten free bakery. A+ for flavor and texture on most of their items I have tried.
BELIEVE THE HYPE. this is a celiac's paradise. nearly cried when I saw how many options there were to choose from!!!! spent $130 and no regrets. spanakopita, croissants, cakes, pies, soft pretzels, breakfast sandwiches, bagels...this place is heaven. now all we need is a location in Los Angeles!!!
Yep, best all around Dedicated GF bakery. My 10 year old has celiac and birthday parties would always be hard since they kid party’s serve pizza. Along with their combats array I’d baked goods, they have packages of frozen 6 inch pizza crusts!!! Game changer! I make one of these individual pizzas before the party, bring it along, and my daughter is all set! The Pennines and Polar Bear packages are perfect to keep at school for birthdays, when she can’t have the birthday treat. I’m so thankful for Mariposa
This place is heaven on earth. I can eat anything off the menu without any fear of cross contamination, as it’s all gluten free. Genuinely I get to feel normal when I eat here. The California sandwich is so delicious and all their baked goods are amazing! My only critique is that it’s very expensive (but worth it)
I was in awe with the amount of gluten free options! Their sandwich bread is delicious, and I tried their GF apple cinnamon turnover and AMAZING! I look forward to going back soon.
Everything is gluten free! We had two sandwiches, the SF steak sandwich and the turkey ruben. Both delicious! Then we also had a bear claw and a cinnamon roll, also very tasty. Sad that I do not live in Oakland because I would like to try all the menu items! Will definitely be coming back when I go to SF or Berkeley!
Amazing selection!! Completely gluten free. Breads, treats, pies, sandwiches are all fantastic. There are take away pot pies, pasta pizza. It has saved holidays, entertaining and every day life!
This spot has been a gold standard spot in the east bay for celiacs forever. It is pricey, but you will not be disappointed. Folks drive from far away to eat here. They have a great savory sandwiches menu, savory hand pies, and fantastic sweets too. My only wish is that there was a bit more to offer in the dine-in experience. It's in a parking lot and, and there really is no ambience. But, what do you want? The rent out here is insane. They also have a cart at the piers in the city which is cool. I'm just glad they're here for us! They also worked closely with the Taylorr family foundation--the organization who puts on Camp Celiac. My son went there for two years, and all of the adorable kids with celiac were treated to Mariposas!
By far my favorite place in the Bay Area to get croissants. Great selection of savory GF options and you can order online. They are pricy though.
Fully GF and celiac safe. Excellent pastries and lunch sandwich items
Way too expensive. Over the years they’ve decreased the sizes and upped the prices. Definitely not the best gf bakery either. They are also PAINFULLY slow for no reason. Most of the employees appear to just be standing around talking or taking drinks from the display case and going somewhere to hide and drink them. Terrible customer service too.
My favorite GF bakery ever! I love their baguette, pretzel, ginger cookie, and the ham & cheese pocket. It reminds me so much of a Starbucks ham & cheese croissant that used to be my go to before I went GF, but mariposa’s is so much better!
The bread here was amazing. Just as tasty as the wheat-based bread that I used to eat. Can't wait to get back order all the same things again and try a bunch of extra stuff!
Wow their bread is so good! And their sour cream coffee cake! And their sugar cookies!!! Wow I just had my first grilled cheese sandwich since being diagnosed with their bread it was so good!
