I have really bad celiac. So I'm very skeptical about places. And when you pull up this place looks ghetto on the outside. You go inside and it's packed! Also not ghetto. Waitstaff very knowledgeable. Chips come in a bag taste just like old school chips and salsa it was awesome. My mom and I shared fajitas. They brought my corn tortillas separate in a bag as well. They were homemade. Very good. I could taste hint of soy in the fajitas, I panicked. Asked the waitress she said yes there's soy but it's gluten free soy sauce. Didn't even get slightly sick and the food was amazing. Don't be afraid to eat here. Especially if you miss eating authentic Mexican food
Delicious! The care the server takes varies by server, but I've had them go above and beyond to ensure that my food was safe for me to eat. There are so many options on the Gluten Free menu - there are very few things they cannot modify to make GF AND they offer separate chips to make sure there is no fryer contamination. This is a regular haunt of mine.
after reading the reviews we decided to eat dinner here. I have to say that this place has a large GF menu. our food was excellent! being Hispanic I was concerned that the GF menu would be lacking taste. I was wrong! this place rocks and we will definitely be back.
The staff here is friendly and the food is good. Be sure to tell your server you need gluten-free first thing because the regular chips aren't gf (they'll bring you a special sealed bag of chips). There are lots of gf and vegetarian options, including dessert and they have Omission beer.
locals favorite as it was packed, great staff & very conscientious about Gf needs. GF chips come in plastic bag separate from nonGF chips, so be sure to wait after requesting them. service was slow but they told us it was because they take extra care with meal in preparing in dedicated area. meal was spicy, but quite tasty! would definitely return if I'm in the area.
I’ve eaten here twice and haven’t gotten sick either time. They bring bagged gluten free chips with a separate bowl of salsa and they will cook your food separately if you let them know. The second time I went I had to ask for the separate bowl of salsa, but they are very willing to accommodate!
Every Maudie’s we have been to they have been extremely knowledgeable and very careful. They have a dedicated celiac prep/kitchen space. They also bring chips in their own bag so you know they were not used in the same oil as gluten. Very safe! If you’re ever unsure, always talk to their friendly managers :)
One of the best GF places I’ve ever eaten at! Servers were very understanding. Brought me my own GF chips. Our table was splitting to orders of fajitas and they brought out one of them gluten-free for me. Menu shows what items are or can be made gluten-free. I was very impressed and didn’t get sick. Definitely recommend!
I was disappointed to see that someone said Maudie’s wasn’t Celiac Friendly... I’m extremely sensitive and they are my go to place! And I have never gotten sick there. Then I read that the poster said he ate the chips they put on the table ASSUMING they were GF! I don’t eat anything without verifying that it is gluten free! This place brings you GF chips in a bag to insure there is no chance of cross contamination and you don’t think that is good enough? Thank you Maudie’s for going above and beyond, because we all know a dedicated fryer is only safe until someone drops a breaded food item into it!
I ordered GF Calderon de pollo and they bring your GF tortilla chips in a sealed bag! Exact same chips as regular ones but protected from cross contamination. Got my own bowl of awesome hot sauce too!!
Wow! I flagged down manager and she explained their processes for keeping celiac customers safe. Told them I have celiac disease and they brought me my own salsa and GF chips in sealed bag. Staff well trained on cross contamination. Had tons of GF choices. I had chicken fajitas on corn (no Serrano peppers since newly diagnosed and server said they are pretty spicy). Expo who brought order out specifically said mine GF and tortillas clearly marked GF. Great food and enough for leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Had no issues. Thanks Maudie’s! I highly recommend this place.
I didn't get sick, it's got a lot of gluten free options, but I don't know why this place is so popular. The food was nothing special, disappointing in fact. With all the great food I've had while visiting Austin, I'm a bit bummed I wasted a meal on this place.
This place was fantastic! They brought gf chips in a sealed bag, upon request, and everything on the menu is noted gf or can be made gf. The Diablo queso was tasty and so were the spinach, mushrooms enchiladas. Finished the meal with the Miles of Chocolate -which is naturally gluten-free. Can't wait to go back!
I'm a celiac and this place is the real deal. The food is excellent and they really take care of gluten free customers, including celiacs. They have separate GF chips, and food done in a dedicated area. You may have limited menu options, but the food is so good, you won't care. I got the appetizer sampler and the bowl and I was in heaven.
Maudie's is my go to Mexican restaurant. They have the biggest menu and a separate area for gluten free. You do need to ask for chips which will be brought out in a bag, but the wait staff is very knowledgeable. I usually get enchiladas or fajitas. The margaritas are also delicious.
DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU ARE GLUTEN FREE!!!!! We went there after finding them on Find Me Gluten Free. I specifically wanted to go because they said they had undergone special training and were certified gluten free. When the waitress approached us, I immediately asked for a gluten free menu. In the meantime, someone brought us chips and salsa which I immediately started eating, When the waitress returned with our menus, she said she would now bring us gluten free chips. When I asked about the chips that had already been served to us, she said "they have a little bit of gluten." WTF....for someone who is celiac there is no such thing as "a little bit" being okay. The manager came over and basically said that it was our fault because people usually announce they are gluten free before they ever sit down. Again, WTF. I tried to explain what a huge issue this was and that they need to change their procedure (putting gluten chips down at a place that is certified gluten-free), but she just didn't get it. She just kept saying we should have told her before we sat down. She did say that it was a cross contamination issue not an ingredient issue, but we chose to leave anyway. There is so much gluten free tex options in Austin, don't take a chance with this place, We ended up at Torchy's tacos and had the best tacos of our lives.
My fav for GF Tex Mex. Huge gluten-free menu. The chips they bring to the table are not gluten-free, however they have gluten free chips they can bring you in a bag & they are very good. The food is always excellent! They also have gluten-free beer.
Good food, LOTS of choices--gluten free menu is almost as big as the regular. Knowledgable staff--they always bring a separate bowl to split queso when we order a large and there are gluten free and possibly not gluten free chips on the table--you don't usually even have to ask.
