They have gluten free pasta. No gluten bread of any kind. I had a piece of fish with a baked potato and carrots. The fish had to be sent back. They put seasoning on it, that made it beyond extremely salty. It was not edible. It had a sherry sauce on it with no flavor. We won’t be going back. Their menu is basic. I hate going thru the items to see what I can eat. Basic menu. Little to no options for gluten free.
We came here so my daughter could have lobster Mac and Cheese - she and my husband have Celiac. It was a small plate, with barely any lobster. I had a chicken wrap and it was pretty good. My husband is GF and DF and was able to get the macaroni with just the lobster. We were told that one of the chefs has Celiac. Pricey for what we got.
I had a good experience here as a celiac. They mark gluten free items and the server let me know what I could have and ensured me that the sides to the meal were also gluten free. I had haddock and it was very good. However I'm giving four stars because it's not a dedicated restaurant or probably even kitchen space and they could improve with some things like a dedicated dryer and a little more knowledge.
I have celiac, had my baby shower here and everything was so good that we came back for dinner after the babe was born. I had the rudder chips, the cheese sauce is amazing. I also had the lobster macaroni and cheese and was feeling great after, albeit full.
During my pregnancy my reaction to gluten was intensified so it was obvious if there was any cross contamination when eating out.
Lots of items on the menu listed as GF. However, it brings to mind one of Inigo Montoya's lines from The Princess Bride: "You keep on using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means." Several pasta items were listed as GF, when what they really meant was that they could substitute in GF pasta but that the entrée itself was gluten-laden; big difference IMO. Additionally, even though I requested GF pasta, they put bread in with my mussels. They did replace them and brought out their GF chips as an apology, although in light of the previous reviewer's comments, I let my family enjoy them.
Gluten Alert!
I am glad to hear that the two other customers who reviewed the Muddy Rudder did not have any reactions.
I believe the Muddy Rudder has created a GF menu to bring in the customer but is not unaware of what it really takes to be gluten safe.
The menu has a dish with bacon listed. I asked if it were indeed gluten free bacon and the waitress stated that she doubted even the cooks could answer that.
As far as the Rudder Chips they are prepared in the same fryer as non-gluten fried foods. They said they dump the oil at night and fry the chips first thing in the morning. The fryer does not become gluten free just by dumping the oil. Even if they had said "We clean the fryer also", I would not trust it. I would only eat food from a gluten free dedicated fryer and still hold my breath that someone, sometime in the past did not accidently drop non-gluten item into it.
Be cautious if you eat here, ask them to tell you exactly how they prepare the GF items (glove changes, dedicated pots, strainers, utensils etc.).
Great Gluten free menu! They offer gluten free pasta dishes, moulten lava cake, red bridge beer, and cold river vodka/gin. The staff is very friendly and they are willing to help out when it comes to allergies.
