i have celiac and was happy to be at a nice cool restaurant in a nice cool area of Charlotte. Menu is labeled GF for several items. I felt comfortable eating there. I told the waiter I have celiac and am ordering a few items ( Caesar salad , pork chop) that should be easy to make gluten free. ( Caesar without croutons, pork chop without gnocchi) Waiter said “if you have real celiac, you cannot eat anything in this restaurant. There is flour everywhere “. I was sitting down with a party of 8 and felt very anxious and uncomfortable to eat there but didn’t want to get up and leave. It was Thanksgiving weekend with my family. I’ve had Celiac for ten years and was never spoken that way that in any restaurant. Very strange. The waiter said the chef informed all the servers to say that. It was as if the chef didn’t want to have to deal with any food or allergy accommodations at all. I still ate my salad. When the waiter placed the pork chop before me, he said, “The chef corrected me. We can serve you here. He just needs to be informed. You did the right thing you telling me you had celiac. I apologize. “ Very odd. Among the oddest experiences I’ve had in a restaurant. I eat out several times a week for ten years and eat very safely because of my dietary restrictions. This experience was the worst fear anyone suffering with celiac has when he or she has when they go to a restaurant. I thank God my recently diagnosed shy teenaged son happened to not be with us.
