Ordered the burrito bowl with Kalua pork. The person serving knew what was gluten free and what wasn't. Most of the rice, beans and sauces as well as the meats were gluten free. The foods that were not were prepared in the back kitchen away from the gluten-free food at the serving counter.
They serve the food cafeteria style so cross contamination is likely. Their knowledge and care to prevent cross contamination was extremely poor. After getting the manager to help me, I felt ok eating the food and I did not get sick. However, it was the worst Mexican food I’ve eaten.
It’s a build your own experience. Everything is clearly labeled. Good as a gluten sensitive person. I can’t say whether it’s okay for celiacs.
Food is tasty, it’s quick and the bar where you pick your food has everything marked with the allergens so you know as you go. No fear of cross contamination and I enjoyed my food! Be sure to stop by when you can’t find anything else quick! Order the bowl, and you can ask to have them change their gloves.
No way I would ever eat here with celiac. Perfect for those just trying to avoid gluten as an optional diet. Very unsafe for celiac. I stood back and watched them make the plates and although everything is labeled (and I really appreciate it) the servers literally touch every tortilla ordered with the serving spoons then back in the next serving bowl over and over. It would be close to impossible to not get glutened.... I also can't eat at Chipotle for the same reasons :(
They do have everything that is GF, marked on the board as Gluten Free. They moved to fast and didn't change gloves. I would only eat here if you can make sure they change gloves. I would only do the bowl as others have suggested.
With not only gluten and dairy allergies… we have a corn allergy as well. We were super excited to find this place. Everything was labeled it if is GF or Vegan. Lots of options.
My only complaint would be that they did not switch gloves between making everyone’s food, but when I asked if they could due to food allergies they had no problem doing so. Over all it had great flavor, and no one got sick.
Watch out for the tacos. They use flour tortillas. I was ordering for delivery, and the photo of the Braised beef tacos showed corn tortillas, the menu didn't list the ingredients, and they didn't answer the phone at the listed number, so I figured I'd trust the photo. I don't have celiac so wasn't concerned about cross-contamination, but I can't eat 2 whole flour tortillas without bad consequences, so had to scrape 'em off. Boo. List your ingredients, OMG!
Staff did not know what was or wasn't gluten free. When we asked some questions we were met with contradictory information. The tortilla presses for flour and corn are shared and the staff refused to use foil to protect against cross contamination which means the only actual GF item on the menu is the bowl as the frier for chips is shared.
Overpriced. Basically a Moes. Go down the line and build your own bowl or burrito. Not bad but definitely overpriced. Chips and salsa were garbage, we didn’t even eat them. I ate less than 1/2 my bowl and gave the rest to a homeless man outside.
Everything is labeled gluten free and/or vegan, which I love. Makes things so easy. I got a veggie burrito bowl, but I think most of the meats were labeled gluten free too. Tortilla chips are fried in a shared fryer, so I skipped the chips.
This must be hit or miss. I didn’t have the same experience as other reviewers. I had to explain a lot and ask specific questions about cross contamination practices. The server was clueless. I did not get sick but there are so many celiac safe places in Waikiki. I would not send someone here.
Stumbled across this place by accident. Climb a flight of stairs right off the sidewalk along the beach. Stand in a line - cafeteria style. Super friendly staff. A little bit of a wait to pay after your food is prepared but that was the only downside. Kalua pork is gluten free along with both bean choices and both rice choices. If you’re just gluten sensitive feel free to try the several protein choices (trace gluten from canned chipotle peppers). They have a big breakfast menu as well. Definitely recommend OMG.
Staff were knowledgeable and knew what was GF and what wasn’t. I got the nachos with beans and cheese (the liquid cheese sauce is not GF, so ask for grated cheese instead). The chipotle sauce is also not GF, neither are the meats. As a vegetarian, I was very happy with my nachos and we returned a second time to eat the same thing! Celiac friendly as long as you ask them to be cautious with cross contamination.
Staff was super knowledgeable and friendly and changed gloves without asking. However, there is no separate fryer for the chips and corn tortillas are heated on the same as the flour. Also, the only meat that is gf is the pork and the roasted vegetables are not gf either. Again, great service but disappointing options.
