Excellent food and great options for gluten free! My meal even came out with an Allergy marker.

Fantastic service even at the bar! Scott was our bartender and both husband and I are celiac. He got steak salad medium rare with bacon and blue cheese. I got steak and eggs with side of sautéed potato halves and it came with a side of dark brown gravy sauce. I have additional spice allergies (cumin, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon) so gave them my card for those and the meal was delicious! Also drank ciders from bottle they were good, and ordered espresso martinis for finish. Lovely experience, no one got sick yesterday or today. And menus is labeled with little GF signs next to each dish. My food came out with a little wooden stick labeled ‘allergy’ sticking out of my steak. Seperate chef or waiter brought my food out by hand to make sure the right food got to the right person and wasn’t misplaced in translation. I’d recommend when you order, if you are celiac, you just say you have a gluten allergy.

Really happy with this restaurant- ambience, service, menu. Was our favorite all around while in DC. They definitely knew cc and celiac. I didn’t know bread would come automatically so had to request some gf bread after the regular came and it took a bit so I’d recommend asking for that when you order drinks so it comes out at the right time. Dedicated fryer, my daughter had steak and fries and really enjoyed.

Recently came here for an anniversary dinner and we really loved it. Very cool historic atmosphere, even still use real gas lamps. I told our waiter about my allergy and he was very understanding, even ran back to the kitchen to ask the chef questions for me. They put a little allergy toothpick in your food too so you know they were aware of it in the kitchen. We got the Elote Loco corn dip as an appetizer and it was amazing. Got the salmon as an entree and it was okay flavor-wise but I didn’t get sick from anything! Would definitely come back, especially because it’s in a great location.

Celiac son had GF hamburger and fries with no reaction. He said it was great. The rest of us really enjoyed our meals as well.

Very busy restaurant. Staff seemed knowledgable. Manager took my order and delivered the food himself. I ordered hanger steak and steamed broccoli. I'd was delicious!

I was very impressed with the staff and their knowledge of allergies, but unfortunately found a full sized crouton hiding in my salad :(

Great bread!! Had a wonderful sandwich. Those are hard to find. The bread had body and texture but was soft to eat. Didn’t fall apart.
Excellent service and lots of menu choices. Really enjoyed my meal here.
Our Server explained they care about allergies and ensured what I was eating was safe
Yes
Fantastic service, great food. Make sure you make reservations because they are always packed! Very accommodating for Celiacs!
Yes
Old school restaurant. Nothing marked GF but they accommodate accordingly. Was pretty good.
GF knowledgeable, separate toasters and options. Solid place for Celiacs
Yes
Lots of options marked “gluten friendly”. They stress they are not a gf facility so they cannot guarantee no cc but the staff was very knowledgeable and reassuring. Excellent desserts as well.
Yes
Got the salmon. Staff took care of me! I have celiac
Yes
So great! The staff was knowledgeable and the safe menu was huge! We were even able to have a slice of Pb pie bc the crust was made out of crushed peanuts and chocolate chips!
Yes
Their menu clearly points out the gluten free options available which are quite a few. The waiter was versed in the cross contamination issue and suggested a few options for my wife. She got a really good fish and was not sick at all afterwards. This a great place that is part of DC history and was glad to be able to enjoy it.
Yes
My son loved the gf mac and cheese. Helpful staff with more knowledge than The Hamilton
The food was okay. The server did check with the chef to see if the option I wanted could be made GF. The breakfast potatoes were amazing! But the ham was salty. Overall it was an okay breakfast. I would give it high makes for the ambiance but it was defiantly not GF friendly.
No
Very difficult to order as they run off to the kitchen and ask if it can be done GF and then come out and tell you no it's not possible. This is especially distressing for celiac kids as you feel like you are an inconvenience. It would be far better to indicate which items could possibly be offered GF
No
Great experience! The waiter was knowledgeable and checked with the chef before placing my order. I ordered hanger steak, but got fries (dedicated fryer) instead of potato fritters. It was awesome! My nonGF husband loved the shrimp and grits (ranked in his top 3). Everything was awesome...not to mention this is a pretty historic place!
Yes
Make reservations! popular place. Nothing marked gf, BUT they will customize anything for you. our server was fantastic. food was delicious.

I made a reservation online and under comments I stated one person in my party had celiac diease and could not eat gluten. when arriving to resturant the wait or was aware. He told us what menu items could and couldn't be made gluten free. when my son made up his mind he talked to the chief and clearly stated how they were modifying his dinner. His dinner came out separate. His dinner was wonderful. All of our dinners were wonderful. Will eat here again.
A DC classic. The waiter knew mostly what could be GF but verified with the chef. The manager delivered the food for the allergy. Said they had GF pasta but had the salmon. Make a reservation, it's popular. Awesome old time atmosphere at the bar and main dining.
Yes
Staff was knowledgeable, but the greeters/hosts have serious "I am so beautiful" attitude. The food was good. I are the "Healthy Plate". It's now 5 hours later and I have a mild issue but that might be from a problem yesterday from elsewhere. I would try it again.
Very limited gluten free items. No pancakes as mentioned on the find me gluten free. The meal I was limited to I could get for free at our hotel.
No
Not gluten friendly - very limited options for brunch
Very good food. Waitress knew what menu items had gluten and what didn't. Many GF options.
Not only is the food delicious, but they are also very accommodating. They offered to make variations even on non-gf, like roasted potatoes. They do not have a separate menu, but they were very knowledgable and careful.
Not many gluten friendly items on the lunch menu. I asked about the spare ribs and they could do gf without the polenta, but made no offer for substitution and charged same price. They were slow with service from the start but servers were pretty friendly. They were willing to accommodate but could have been taken to next level and they didn't.
Yes
The staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating and pointed out many gluten-free choices. Our food was pretty good but not overwhelmingly good. We did enjoy it and would recommend it for lunch or dinner while out memorial-hopping.
Very accommodating and knowledgeable. No separate gf menu, but on both our visits, the servers knew what could be made gf, and followed up with the chef.
Yes
Very good.
Wonderful food. Chef brought my food out to me personally. Not a dedicated menu, but waitress said anything can be made gluten free. I felt very confident eating here. I had half chicken which didn't need to be modified.
Yes
Excellent service, extremely knowledgeable staff, told me how they review all of their foods for food allergies with Doctors!
We have Sarge as our waiter. He was awesome! We went for lunch. It was quite busy! 30 minute wait! They take gluten free very seriously and our waiter was knowledgeable. Wonderful Gal-entine's Day lunch!
Yes
I had the best possible experience here. The place was packed so I sat at the bar. The bartender took my need for gluten-free food very seriously. When they served it (salmon salad) there was an obscure grain that he noticed. We looked it up on google and, according to the site we found, it contained gluten. The bartender instantly took it back to the kitchen and ordered a replacement meal without the grain and then refused to charge me for the meal (and offered desert). Best service ever. And the salmon salad was unbelievably great. If every restaurant and employee treated customers like this, we'd be set.
Yes
I didn't even order yet and I would give this place a zero if I could. I came here based on the reviews of how accommodating they are but I asked the server if he could help me with gluten free options and he said we don't have anything gluten free and when i further asked if they would be willing to change anything on the menu to make it Gf he just said "yea" and walked away! So now I am sitting here trying to find ANYTHING i can eat and very annoyed.
OUTSTANDING... We had Rohit as our waiter. He was awesome and explained everything that was gluten free. I had a 1/2 roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, green beans and peanut butter pie for desert. It was so good we went back the next night and are going for brunch tomorrow. Prices are reasonable and service was great. It is a very busy place so make a reservation if you can.
I found this while visiting the White House. The waitress was very accommodating and assured that the chef would be willing/able to alter the menu to be gluten free since there wasn't a separate gluten free menu as long as it is not anything fried (for obvious reasons.) I had the mussels with rice (instead of pasta) it was super tasty and a very big plate! They also have gluten free desserts. I didn't have a reaction after eating here, however I am just gluten intolerant not celiac & do not have a reaction as easily.
Explained I have a gluten allergy. Staff was very nice but not knowledgable. Ordered a salad with no dressing and olive oil on the side. Salad came with premade salad dressing. After assuring me it was made with a white vinegar that would not cause a reaction, I ate it. It was delicious. But twenty minutes into the meal I got a reaction. Should have followed my intuition and sent it back.
I found this as a traveler to DC on business and was downtown after 8:00 p.m. Many of the other GF restaurants that appeared on Find Me Gluten Free were closed, but this one stayed open until 2:00 a.m. I asked for a GF menu, but was told that my waitress would take care of me. The waitress didn't have a specific gluten free menu, but she was versed enough to be able to tell me which items on their regular menu were gluten free. I ordered the Wild Salmon. It was delivered to me separately so as to avoid contamination. The meal was GREAT as was the price (very reasonable for being a quarter mile or less from the Whitehouse!! Just missed out on enjoying their sourdough bread served with the meal. I highly recommend this place to other travelers or locals.

I will gladly eat here again tomorrow! We sat at the bar, discussed our GFCF requirements with the bartender and were pleasantly surprised with his knowledge of the menu items, their ingredients and his suggestions. We both had the BLT salad minus the Bread, with oil and vinegar as the standard dressing contains gluten. We felt safe and enjoyed every bite...all on a Sunday morning in the midst of brunch, packed with runners after a 10k race! Ate there again this morning, arrived 5 minutes before breakfast ended but they squeezed us in. I ordered The American - apple juice, 2 poached eggs, bacon, no toast and asked about the hash browns... They brought me a safe GFCF breakfast which included potatoes hot off the oiled grill. I love this place!!
